The correct name for the condition, would be Ovarian Cyst
Nope, the reasons for the presence of an ovarian cyst are mainly two:
a).- Normal formation of a small "cyst" in the middle of the menses, (ovulation that comes from a normal cyst in either ovarium). This is a normal finding, and when the woman is on fertile reproductive years (14 to 47), the normal menstrual cycle produces a normal "functional cyst that will dissapear after it liberates the ova into the peritoneum.
b),-Persistent cyst in either ovarium that is detected in two separate ultrasounds of the pelvis, that are generally benign, however, because a very small percent of them do not dissapear (persistent cysts) they need a follow up with ultrasound by either your GP or your gynecologist.
Remember an ovarian cyst is just that, a cyst, and does NOT necessarily mean tragedy, cancer, or something that can not be watched, followed up with high definition ultrasound, and if the case is needed removed and analyzed, if they increase in size, or are irregular in shape.
Remember, the only point I am trying to make clear, is that stress or mental tension, Have NOTHING to do with ovarian Cysts, however in a nervous person, or a not very well informed one, the finding of a cyst, can be a source of distress.
Take it easy...

Unfortunately many times. The first time I was 15 and went because of pains and found a cyst on each ovary, one the size of a grapefruit and another a little smaller. I had surgery and followed up with birth control. My body however still didn't cooperate and after about 1-1/2 yrs, I would go back to the doc, have surgery and change the type of pills/shot for birth control. About a year ago I went back in and found multiple cysts, but after changing pills, they were gone in about 3 months. The pains can drive you crazy, and there is no real rhyme or reason (other than hormonal) but just try to stay on top of it. My doc says there not necessarily harmful, just painful. In the event you do need surgery, standard is for laproscopy where they go through your belly button and make 2 very small incisions also right above your pelvic bone. It's an outpatient procedure and they say you should be back to normal in a day, but I always tried to schedule mine on a Friday so I could recover over the weekend. Hopefully you can get on some pills to get your body back in a groove. Good luck!
