I would love to give to charity, but uncle sam takes half of what I make in taxes. I am living in near poverty, and the liberals are telling me I need to give more to charity???? I thought that's what they wanted to use the government for, free welfare handouts, oh wait, that's for the liberal elite only. Maybe when the government's money is stopped being spent either on the rich or on single moms living immoral lifestyles, we can focus on how to give the money back to those who really did earn it rather than people leeching off society, and maybe then I could give some charity.

I don't know about "Uncle Sam's", but here in U.K giving to charity is purely voluntary. If your really hard up, but your conscience has been pricked then just give a little, I think that should be perfectly acceptable.

If you are living in poverty and you are struggling to make ends meet financially than I don't think it would be wise to give money away. I am a student living on my own. I work full-time and I have many bills to pay. I wouldn't waste my extra cash, if any, on charity. many charities are mismanaged and cant provide proper assistance for people who need it. my point is, if you are serious about giving to charity, I would recommend volunteer work. all it costs is a little of your time and you know your helping people because your actively involved.

I agree if the neo-con's would stop sending all of our money overseas to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and China for oil and tv's and other such goods we would have more to spend back home.
Now for a little reality check, you probably don't give more then 25% of your pay to taxes even when including SS and Medicare tax. US tax rates are among the lowest in the world, and yes you can thank your hero GW for that to some extent. Taxes could actually be alot lower if so much money wasn't wasted in overseas occupation projects. If we could also stop the high divorce and pregnancy rates among the Republicans (yes, they are the leaders in divorce) we could probably cut back on the number of single moms in this country as you've stated.

Charity is always voluntary.
You are right though, it is difficult to give more to charity, even when you want to, when a large chunk of your income is taken by the government.
Look into the Fair Tax. I think you might like what you find out and it would give you more of your own money to do with as you see fit...even give more to charity.

There are people in other countries who pay much higher taxes than americans and still manage to donate more per capita to charities.
Admit it: You can afford to give to charities, you just don't want to.
Perhaps you should spend some time in a children's cancer ward or a slum in Africa then re-evaluate how hard-up you are.

Ain't going to happen! Until the mindless sheep who elect current government officials start thinking for themselves and get the incumbents out of office, the "elite" will always have the opportunities to fill their own pockets first. They see the Silent Majority as cash cows -- and the politicians run the slaughter house! Use your vote on election day to send them a message!
