People are told that evolution is a fact. According to my study intelligent design is the more likely inference of the data.
But none of these theories are provable because no one was there.
And a scientific theory must at least be observed somewhere, but there is to date no observation of evolution either today or in the fossil record, so technically evolution is not a scientific theory, it is a philosophy or more likely a religion.
To those who read this:- I know this will upset some people who read this, but if you can show some proof of evolution then I would be interested to hear from you.

Yes, evolution is just a theory . Then again so is relativity but I wouldn't sit at ground zero during a nuclear test. Gravitation is just a theory but I wouldn't go and walk off a cliff.

In order to be classified as a theory a concept has to be a mathematical description;verified hypothesis;or a proven model of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of being tested through experiment or falsified through empirical observation. From a scientific point of view "theory" and "fact" are not necessarily in opposition.

Intelligent Design and Creation are not valid theories because you can not observe, test, or falsify God or an Intelligent Designer. God by definition must be accepted on faith.

Evolution on the other had is an observable occurence. For example, the Galapogos finches observed by Darwin have been observed recently to have evolved shorter beaks to eat smaller seeds. This evolution occurred in the last 20 years.

You don't know what a scientific theory is. You don't know the evidence for each idea. Evolution is a theory, just like gravity and aerodynamics. Creationism is not a theory, it is a hypothesis. Same with ID. Evolution has books and books of scientific evidence, where as creationism and ID doesn't have any.

Evolution is a fact - populations change over time.
Evolution is also a theory - the theory of evolution explains how evolution happens.

This is not hard to understand. It is exactly the same as anything else in science: Gravity is a fact - things fall; the theory of gravity explains how things fall.

And as for "just a theory", a theory is as good as it gets in science. It means that there is a well-supported, consistent and usable framework to explain something. This is what we have in evolution.

You claim that creationism is more than "god did it". If you can present your "theory of creation", along with some convincing evidence, we will all be happy to accept that creation is also a theory. Until that time, we will continue to think that creation is just an unsupported assertion.

Creationism or ID is just a lazy way of looking at the world. It's just putting the god stamp on anything you don't understand....if there is a god and it gave you a brain....you are then wasting its gift by not trying to understand the world around you!
And if it's proof you want....you only have to open your eyes, read a few books, open your mind and it's all out there...evolution in action.

You could not be further from reality. Creationism is a fairie tale. You do not seem to know what a theory refers to in scientific terms. Let me help.
In science, a theory is a mathematical description, a logical explanation, a verified hypothesis, or a proven model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. It follows from this that for scientists "theory" and "fact" do not necessarily stand in opposition.

The term "just a theory" is a typical distortion. Gravity is just a theory. Electromagnetism is "just a theory". Theories are based in evidence and tested by verifying predictions they make. Neither creationism nor intelligent design are theories. They are not based in evidence, nor do they make testable predictions. The are countered by evidence, so they are not feasible.

Do people know what "theory" means in scientific terms? I'd say I know of at least one person that doesn't.

# A scientific theory is an established and experimentally verified fact or collection of facts about the world. Unlike the everyday use of the word theory, it is not an unproved idea, or just some theoretical speculation. The latter meaning of a 'theory' in science is called a hypothesis.

# A well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world; an organized system of accepted knowledge that applies in a variety of circumstances to explain a specific set of phenomena.

In today's scientific world theory is basically a fact, once proven beyond a doubt it is called scientific law. The problem is that evolution has not met the scientific criteria to be called a theory. It is not testable, repeatable, falsifiable and it has not been observed. It is a hypothesis that science wants to call theory because they are terrified of a God. Belief in the theory of evolution as it now stands takes a lot of faith in itself
As soon as a scientist states he believes in a creation says so publicly they are ostracized by their peers. Most people that believe in Evolution will not look at anything, scientific or evidential that might lend credence to Creationism.

Yes Evolution is a theory......just like Electrical theory and Gravitational theory. Do you have a problem with these too?

At least find out what a scientific theory is before you post such a silly question. It only shows your ignorance of science.

Pretty early to be drinking.

The "It's just a theory" argument does nothing other than flag you as someone who knows nothing whatsoever about science, and who has been taken in by creationist propaganda.

Stephman wrote

"And a scientific theory must at least be observed somewhere, but there is to date no observation of evolution either today or in the fossil record".

That is simply false. It's about as honest as if I'd written "And as we know, creationists are all child abusing drug addicts".

Doesn't the fact that you have to lie so much to defend creationism tell you something about the quality of your position? It should.
