There are moths in my kitchen. I have learned to catch them in mid air using rubber gloves. Sticky tape seems cruel because their death in this way is prolonged. Do I really have to throw out all the food I have in the pantry to get rid of them? What do their eggs look like? Any practical advice is welcome.

If you have moths, then you also have larvae and eggs that are developing somewhere. The eggs are pretty hard to spot - they are tiny, black specks that are loosley bound by silk. The larvae are tiny caterpillars. If you don't want to throw out any food, you can pour flour, cake mixes, etc., through a strainer to catch all of the larvae, and then store the food in sealed containers. We use large plastic jars (1 - 1.5 gallon size), and tape the package labels to the jars.

Usually you don't have to throw everything away. You just need to through away open containers in your pantry. Then clean it well. You don't want to leave any flour residue or dust. After you wash off your cans and containers you should be okay. Or you could go with the solution my aunt did. She got a pet lizard who is allowed to wander around the kitchen when insects get in. She doesn't have to worry about buying crickets for a while and there are no more ants, flies, or moths in the area.
