My family has a history of it, and I want to try and do eveything I can to help minimize it's effects before they really start kicking in. (I already feel all of my major joints pop).

Go and live somewhere warm and dry!

On a more serious note:
Take cod liver oil it improves joint mobility and fluidity.
If you do feel any twinges of discomfort then take rosehip capsules as rosehip is said to contain powerful inflammatory substances and is providing relief for many with osteoarthritis.
Some with arthritis and/or others who are at risk of sports injuries take glucosamine with/or without chondroitin to preserve the integrity of joints. You can find a vegetarian version of glucosamine if you are vegetarian.

You might want to stay away from milk if you have a tendency towards arthritis. Read these:

But the 'link' is perhaps not between milk and all types of arthritis plus it is not definitive. The milk connection seems to be implicated in inflammatory/rheumatoid arthritis in particular. Also, you would need to find a reliable source of calcium and protein, such as fortified soya milk if you were to give up dairy.

No way to avoid arthritis-this is a wear and tear condition. Your joints start to deteriorate at 35-40 yrs. Some say this is our penalty for assuming the upright position. You can just help minimize the effects of arthritis by living a healthy life.

First just because you have a family history does not mean you will automatically succumb to Arthritis. Joints that pop, reckon most teenagers can pop joints. You do not state what 'type' of Arthritis as in 'inflammatory' or 'wear and tear'.
Wear and Tear is just that, as we age, chances are we will succumb to Osteoarthritis somewhere in our bodies. Inflammatory Arthritis, the earlier you see a Rheumatologist, the better chance you stand of slowing the condition down.

1) Take more calcium. Milk, fish, vegetable are good sources of calcium!
2) Exercise regularly. It helps to strengten your bones.
3) Consult a physiotherapist
