Catholic do not believe that good works will get you into heaven.
Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):
By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.
However after receiving salvation, we cannot help but follow the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and do good works.
Also remember Jesus said in Matthew 25:
"Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'
Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'
And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'
Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'
And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
Is Jesus commanding us to perform good works?
With love in Christ.

I'm not a Christian, but I was raised Catholic. I must say I'm not entirely sure what being Catholic has to do with this.
The first verse states plainly that good works alone will not get you into Heaven, but by faith and grace (of God) one is saved.
However, if you believe in John 3:16, my understanding is that one would want to live out their life like Christ, therefore, good works are an effect of salvation, not a cause.

Good works wont earn you the right to enter into heaven only faith in the work of Christ will do that. However, if Christ be in you, the Spirit of God will manifest himself through you as Jesus said a light cannot be hid.If Christ be in you then how would it possible that you would not have good works? That is impossible.

Good works by themselves are worthless in the eyes of God. Faith by itself is equally vain. You have to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Your actions (works) will determine whether your faith is genuine or not...in other words...if you "get it" or not.
Don't forget to read the second chapter of James too. It's easy for someone to take one or two lines out of context and create their own sect of Christianity based on them. Perhaps that's why there are so many different protestant denominations? They all agree that Catholic doctrine is "wrong", but can't seem to agree with each other. Each one thinks the other "doesn't understand", and they split away in dissention.
God bless

What good is faith if it has no outward signs? Isn't it then just a "good feeling" you keep to yourself, and you are really just fooling yourself?
Jesus said not all those who say "Lord, Lord" will be saved, but only those who do the will of the Father. Matthew 7:21-23
So what is the will of the Father that we all must do? Matthew 25: 31-46 tells us clearly:
They will say to Him (at the Judgement): Lord, when did we see you hungry and did not feed you; or thirsty and did not give you drink; or sick or imprisoned and did not visit or minister to you; or did not welcome you when you were a stranger?
He tells them that (even in spite of saying to Him "Lord, Lord!!") when they did not do these things to the least person, they were refusing to help Jesus, Himself. To those who did do these things, however, (He calls them the "righteous") they will be rewarded with eternal life. But for those who did not do these things, they will be cast into everlasting punishment.
These are what the Church calls the Works of Mercy. And if our Faith is truly alive, then we will do these things.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
Why did God make me?
Answer: God made me to know Him, to love Him and to serve Him in this world so that I can live happily with Him forever in the next.
This is such a beautiful plan that God has constructed. He gives us each the desire to know Him (if we are sincere and honest with ourselves). By making that effort to seek Him, He will surely reward this by helping us to know Him better. The more we know Him, the more we love Him. When we truly love Him, we want to SERVE Him and DO His will. This helps to spread His love throughout the world (by our serving others in love and mercy) and spreads God's message of love for all.
Good works alone will not get you into heaven; they must be rooted in faith. But faith alone (and that word "alone" was added to Romans 3:28 by Martin Luther, by the way--it's not in the original text ) is dead if seeking to DO God's will does not flow from it.

Jesus opened the door to allow us to enter heaven, however we must still perform good works in order to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Read :
1 Timothy 4:12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Read it all..You cite Ephesians 2:8 & 9. Try 8,9, and 10
Ephesians 2:8-10; For by Grace you are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, for it is a gift of God. Not of works, that no man glory. For we are HIS workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them. (Works do not gain us salvation, but as followers of Christ we are expected to take up His work, being good stewards and representatives.)
Matthew 7:21; Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven
Romans 2: 5-6; But according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, thou treasurest up to thyself wrath, against the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God: Who will render to every man according to his works
And you would probably like to remove the entire Book of James from your Bible. James tells us that Faith without Works is like a Body without a Soul...Dead.
Please read James Chapter 2, verses 14 through 26
