Anaphylaxis is an acute systemic (rapid, multi-system) and severe allergic reaction. The term comes from the Greek words ana (against) and phylaxis (protection). Anaphylaxis occurs when a person is exposed to a trigger substance, called an allergen, to which they have already become sensitized. Minute amounts of allergens may cause a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis may occur after ingestion, inhalation (though this is rare), skin contact, or injection of an allergen. The most severe type of anaphylaxis—anaphylactic shock—will usually lead to death in a matter of minutes if left untreated.
Anaphylaxis is the opposite of Prophylaxis in which previous sensitisation builds resistance.

Allergy: A misguided reaction to foreign substances by the immune system, the body system of defense against foreign invaders, particularly pathogens (the agents of infection). The allergic reaction is misguided in that these foreign substances are usually harmless. The substances that trigger allergy are called allergen. Examples include pollens, dust mite, molds, danders, and certain foods. People prone to allergies are said to be allergic or atopic.
Allergy ranges fron Anergy to Hyperargy. Anergy is not responding to any foreign stimuli. Hyperergy is over reaction and is normally called Allergy.

You can die from anaphylaxis, took care of one the other day. She was gray, very low B/P and low o2saturation. If she would have waited 5 more minutes, she would have died! she was lucky there was a very smart ER doctor on, since there was nothing pointing to 'allergic reaction.' not in the typical sense anyway. Allergy can be anything that is from a stuffy or runny nose, to asthma problems. Usuallly not life threatening, unless it turns to anyphylaxis. Like you can have an allergic reaction to penicillin with hives one time, the next time you're exposed to it you can have anaphylaxis.
