Have you heard that a person who brings "a million family problems" to a relationship is not worth the baggage they bring? No?.....Well, now you have. (We all have our bears to cross, but this guy sounds like he has a whole zoo.)

Ideally, dump him. Or, if you won't dump him, make him dump his family. Life is too short to deal with people with a bunch of problems, which (other than actual medical problems or something) are usually just made up. In the U.S. and similar countries, most of our problems are due to idleness. Seriously, there are lot of healthy and happy people out there, so move the hell on!

Make sure he knows your'e there for him. You can't ease his trouble, those are his demons to sort out.But you can distract some of the pain by leading him away from them by trying to keep him focused on you. That won't make them go away ,but there can be a few seconds or minutes of serenity for him and he'll love you for that. And like STAR said prayer for him sure couldn't hurt!

Be there if he wants to talk, but understand that at some point you might want to recommend a professional counselor. There are some things you shouldn't handle.

FORCE him to take a vacation, and while on it, give him all the love you can so that he forgets.

Additional: Just don't play hanky panky.

Just be there for him to lend an ear, a shoulder or whatever he needs. (within reason, of course LOL)
