Does anyone know of any software that will let me recode a 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9, without the result being a horribly stretched out image.

P.S. please recommend software able to support .ogm,.mkv, and .avi.

The question is... WHY? If you don't want any stretching, then the only thing to be done is add 2 black bars on either side. And why would you want THAT?

And this involves re-encoding the whole clip, you know.

I would write an AVISynth script and use AVISynth frame serve into whatever encoder you use, probably VirtualDub to do this. It's slow, but it doesn't mess with the video.
