It's important to have optimum health, if you expect to grow healthy, beautiful hair. You'll probably want to start by taking a good multivitamin everyday, drinking 8 glasses of water/per day, and eating healthy meals.
Some cultures swear by scalp massages once a day or even every few days. Scalp massages stimulate blood flow to the scalp thereby (theoretically) increasing growth potential. I have found a benefit from doing massages in conjunction with an oil like jojoba lightly applied.
Try to limit damage to your hair. Damage can occur when you constantly brush, comb, or style your hair. Obviously, we can't protect our hair 100% from damage but by following simple rules we can combat the damage done.
Rule 1: Never brush or comb your hair while it's wet UNLESS you have the type of hair (particularly curly hair) that needs to be combed and styled before it's dry. If you must style your hair while wet try to find a seamless comb such as a Mason Pearson rake comb to use.
Rule 2: Limit coloring and/or chemically processing your hair. These chemicals cause damage and breakage no matter what the box says.
Rule 3: Don't forego a hair trim just because you're trying to grow your hair faster. Have regular small trims done every six to eight weeks to keep your ends healthy and to keep the splits at bay.
Hope all this helped you. If you're really interested in growing long hair you may want to check out the Long Hair Community online.

Lets see where to start.... 1st don't cut !!!! Salons want you to have your have trimed often because they want your money.... Hair grows from the roots and not the ends... If you don't have split ends then your hair doesn't need a trim.... Longer you can go between trims the longer your hair will get.... Patience is Key !!!! No heat also.... That means no hair dryers, curling irons or products of any kind..... They are bad for your hair :o( As for the split ends.... If you do have them trim only right about where is needed or do a dusting.... One of best ways to reduce split ends and breakage of your hair so it can grow long is let your hair air dry and then comb out.... DON'T brush while your hair is wet.... Hair is like elastic and when wet is more prone to streching out and breaking.... Try to avoid brushing so much.... Use a wide tooth comb.... Anywhooo.... Good luck :O)

Good hygiene is important for healthy hair. This includes brushing the hair properly and washing it with a mild shampoo. Good nutrition (a well - balanced diet of fresh foods and lots of water) not only helps one to have beautiful - looking hair but also improves it's texture.
Massage your head every time you shampoo . The extra circulation provided by the shampoo /message stimulates the oil glands to work more efficiently and brings natural oils into the hair.
This applies to all types of hair.
Use shampoo that is pH balanced and that is designed specially for you hair type (dry, oily, etc.). Ask your hair specialist to assist you in selecting the right shampoo for your hair type. Always rinse with cool (not hot) clean water for extra shine. Allow your hair to air dry naturally whenever possible. Never brush soaking - wet hair, as the hair is quite elastic at this time and can be pulled and stretched to the breaking point. A wide - toothed comb is best for wet hair.
Give your hair a good brushing before bed. This should be done by bending forward from the waist, head down, brushing from the back to front. Brush at least fifty to one hundred strokes. This will help remove dirt, pollutants and damaging particles from the hair in addition to stimulate circulation which will increase natural oils for added sheen and oxygen to the hair and scalp.
Once a week massage jojoba oil with one to two drops of rosemary oil for dry or oily hair and tea tree for hair that show signs of dandruff into the scalp. Leave on over night, wash out the next day.
trim regularly 6-8 weeks
maintain a balanced diet of protein and vitamin E food
sleep well and dont stress
drink lots water and eat your fruits and veggies
walk or keep your heart rate up for 15 minutes each day...

Eat a proper diet and take a good multi-vitamin. Make sure your diet and vitamin regime includes biotin.
Brush your hair at least twice daily, to remove debris and distribute natural oils - use a natural hair brush for this. You can use other types of combs and brushes for styling, but also use natural when doing your dailing brushing.
Use conditioner, and use a spray-on conditioner between shampoos. Keep hair tangle-free, this will help to prevent the split ends by eliminating breakage.
Keep the use of hair appliances to a minimum!

Cut it. When I tried to grow my hair out before it was in good shape, I ended up with a headful of split ends rather than pretty long hair. It was disgusting. Start with a small trim so your hair is fresh and then just don't heat style it or dye it or anything.

I'm no expert, but I've read in several magazines and used this method myself. Every other day try roating from using conditioner in shower to using a good leave in conditioner, to make a sort of protective layer from wind and other things that tear hair. You might also want to get a more frequent trim to prevent split ends more effectily. This sounds overally simple, but in time you can grow long and healthy hair as long as you take care of it.

use "catwalk"
don't brush your hair when dry if your hair is curly
only brush your hair when it's wet
when you put in product; brush it through with your fingers then scrunch it to give strength and volume :)
good luck!!
