Judaism is a religion. Some people (including my sister in law who happens to be Jewish) argue that it is also a race, but they have trouble explaining the black Jews and the Asian ones.

Probably at one stage they were a race but that is long lost in time. However, the rule of thumb is that Jewish is the one born from a Jewish mother not the father.

Jerusalem is a city which is divided in two sectors the Jewish on and the Palestinian. You can have Palestinians born in Jerusalem (after all that whole area used to be known as Palestine).

Hitler wanted to kill the jews for economical reasons, they had a big influence in the German economy at the time.

And finally, people hate them because they are a bunch of whiners who have taken the world in a huge guilt trip for something most of us have nothing to do.

What is Judaism, and who or what is a Jew? Depending upon whom you talk to, or the selection of books you read, you will come away with very different answers to this most provocative question. Is Judaism simply a religion? Is it a cultural identity or just an ethnic group? Are Jews only a clan of people or are they a nation?

According to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary a “Jew” is: 1a: a member of the tribe of Judah b: Israelite 2: a member of a nation existing in Palestine from the 6th century B.C. to the 1st century A.D. 3 : a person belonging to a continuation through descent or conversion of the ancient Jewish people 4 : one whose religion is Judaism.

According to rabbinical Judaism, a Jew is one who has a Jewish mother, or one who has formally converted to Judaism. Leviticus 24:10 is often cited to give this belief credibility, although the Torah makes no specific claim for this tradition. Some rabbis say that it has nothing to do with what that individual actually believes. These rabbis tell us that a Jew does not need to be a follower of Jewish laws and customs to be considered Jewish. In fact, a Jew can have no belief in God at all and still be Jewish based on the above rabbinical interpretation.

Other rabbis make it clear that unless the person follows the precepts of the Torah and accepts the “Thirteen Principles of Faith” which Maimonides (Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, one of the greatest medieval Jewish scholars) so clearly expresses, he cannot be a Jew. Although this person may be a “biological” Jew, he has no real connection to Judaism.

In the first book of the Torah, Genesis 14:13 teaches us that Abram, commonly recognized as the first Jew, (his name was later changed to Abraham) was described as a “Hebrew.” The name “Jew” comes from the name Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, and one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Apparently the name “Jew” originally referred to those who were only a member of the tribe of Judah, but when the kingdom was divided (Israel in the north and Judah in the South) after the reign of Solomon (1 Kings, chapter 12) it referred to anyone in the kingdom of Judah which included the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Levi. Today, many believe that a Jew is anyone who is a physical descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, regardless of which of the original twelve tribes they descend from.

Jewish is both a race and a religion. Jesus was both. He was a practicing Jew. You need to study the history of the Jewish people. The OT is a good place to start. Briefly... It started with Abraham when he found favor with God and God made Abraham and his people the chosen people, the Jewish (Hebrew) nation. There were prophesies of a Messiah that would come. Jesus was born into the line of David. Christians say that Jesus was the Messiah and Jews don't. But Jesus himself knew the truth.

The second part of your question: Read the gospel stories about the Crucifixion. The Jewish authorities asked that the Romans kill Jesus. This is one of the reasons some people do not like them. Also Jewish bankers were very good at charging a lot to loan money and were very shrew business people which made people mad. I have nothing against the Jewish nation or the religion. They are God's chosen people.

Both
Either or
Neither.

A Jew is not a religion, for there are Christian Jews.

There is a religion called Judaism--it is actually a group of religions--Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed, and so on--but one can be a Jew Atheist also. Thus a Jew is not a religion.

A Jew is not a race. There are black Jewish people and Chinese Jews, and so on. One can convert and became a Jew, but a wolf cannot convert into a dove, thus a Jew is not a race.

There are many who call themselves a Jew out of ignorance, others do it by choice.

A Jew is a cultural phenomena of people who chose to believe in Unity (a true meaning of ONE GOD)--unity of the HUMAN RACE!

Jesus was a Jew & He practice healed & taught the word of God from the Torah The early Jewish leaders thought He practised blasamey as He claimed to be the Son of God.They were blinded by His teachings, which they should have known, He met all the early prophets criteria as foretold. But they were looking for a Messiah that would over come the Roman occupation of the Holy land. They still look for Messiah,& believe he is all ready born & will make himself known.
Jews conspired to have him killed, but they had no authority & sought the Roman governor Pilot to crucify Him, though He found no grounds for death, but feared the crowds & riots as there were many in Jerusalem to observe Passover. But Jesus said no one takes His life, but He laid it down for the love of mankind to be their redeemer, and if He layed down His life & God gave Him the power to raise it back up. That is the power of the cross & Resurection.
The early Christians were Jews who preached the Good news. They believed in Jesus as Messiah & believed He would return.
Many falsely hold the belief that the Jews killed the Christ Jesus. And there lies in ingorance & hostility toward the Jews. Israel is the nation of Jews, but there are non-practicing Jews, as in any relegion. Jews live everywhere in the world, especially in America, where they migrated to escape perscution
Jesus ascended into heaven & will return as He promised.sooner then we think. Watch!

Ethnically a Jew is someone that is a descendant of Abraham. Judaism is the religion that Jews follow. It was established through a covenant between God and Abraham. God further revealed himself to others such as Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, etc.

All of these people looked forward to a day when the Messiah would come. Some believed that he would deliver the Jewish nation and establish a new physical kingdom. Others believed that he would establish a spiritual kingdom.

Jesus was an ethnic Jew practicing Judaism. He claimed and I believe that he was the Messiah. Some Jews believed him as well and they were the beginnings of Christianity. Others believed that he was a prophet or rabbi with great power. The final group believed he was a false prophet and convinced the Roman authorities of their day to crucify him.

Judaism is a religion.

The Jewish people (the Hebrews) are an old, old race of tribes from the middle east. The religion of Judaism was spawned out of their collective beliefs and took the bulk of its form around 600 BCE when it became the first monotheism. Prior to that time the Jews practiced a variety of things including paganism, having a multitude of gods, idols, celestials, etc. They probably got their ideas of heaven and after-death life from the Egyptians who were the world's first culture to explore the idea of an after-life and a heaven - it was the Egyptians who invented the idea of heaven and they placed it in the sky.

If it's hard to remember, say Hebrew or Israeli for the race.

The Jewish faith claims that Jesus was born and was a very good man, but was not the Messiah (the person who would redeem humanity of its sins).

Yes, Jesus was of the Jewish race (he was a Hebrew). While He was on earth, Jesus practiced the Jewish faith (because the Jewish faith didn't become obselite till Jesus died and rose again).

Jews are from Israel, the capitol of Israel has been Jerusalem for some time now (it was also the ancient capitol).

Listen, there is a race known as the Jewish people and their religion is also known as Jewish and they believe in the old testament portion of the bible. They have selected it and the contents as being in line with their beliefs.

Don't be confused by religion as there are many pathways to God and heaven. Which is the right way, well almost all of them are. They involve a different name for God and different levels or practices and celebrations as a path. The best help you could want is within you. All the questions you have can be answered if you just ask. If you are a believer or non believer get on your knees and ask God for the answers. Talk to him and seek him. He will show you things in different ways and give you the understanding to differentiate between them. Religious gatherings used to be in Tabernacles, but basically with most religions people come together to worship the Lord in their own way. There are many like you in the church that are looking for something and as a result there is many different types of people in church. Some believe, some don't. I believe that the church was meant for people with the same beliefs to share the same path and at the same time see how people are that are hypocrites, liars, and the like will be there also but you will be able to see the difference and I think that is what the church does. Gives you a place of worship and learning not only about the religion but the people in our society also. Make your own relationship with God as he will accept you. A faith based belief is the most difficult as there is evidence but no scientific, hard fact evidence to base it on. Since the Garden of Eden man has been given the ability to take possession of his own mortal soul and choose its destiny. It is up to each individual to determine what he/she believes. Talk to God and ask for what you seek and while He may not talk to you he may show you what you ask and give you the awareness to see things you could not see before. Bless you in your search.
