Codeine is addictive no matter how it is taken. Of course, it takes prolonged use.

Of course it can. Codeine is highly addictive. Benyline works on
the central nervous system. That should scare you.

Overdosage may be fatal especially in infants and children.
In infants & children CNS stimulations predominates over CNS depression causing ataxia, excitement, tremors, psychoses, hallucinations and convulsions; hyperpyrexia may also occur. Deepening coma and cardiorespiratory collapse may follow. In adults, CNS depression with drowsiness, coma and convulsions, progessing to respiratory failure or possibly cardiovascular collapse.
Codeine phosphate:
Produces central stimulation with exhilaration and, in children, convulsions, followed by vomiting, drowsiness, respiratory depression and cyanosis, and coma.

Yes, the meds will show up as drugs. You have to explain, before you take the drug test, all the medications you are on. Taking your old meds is not against the law. If you are taking Vicodin along with cough syrup/codiene, it sounds like you are abusing drugs. And your probation officer is not stupid...you're not sick, you're getting high..!

Codeine is an opiate, which puts it in the same category of drugs as morphine and HEROIN. Of COURSE it's addictive!
