Even parts of ancestry.com are free. ancestry.com subscriptions support All Free rootsweb.com. There's familysearch.org, genforum, gencircles. If your state pays for it you can get HeritageQuest Online census images free through your library. There's findagrave.com and interment.net, castlegarden.org and ellisisland.org.
There's a lot that is not and has never been online. Eventually you'll have to pay and do some letter writing and legwork in courthouses and cemeteries and maybe LDS family history centers.

Use the computers at your local library for free access to one of the major sites that you'd otherwise pay to access. The library pays for a public use license and that lets you get into all the best sites for free. Some library systems even let you access their computer from home in order to have access to sites that way. While you're at the library you'll also have access to major reference works that are invaluable to our research, such as Germans to America, the Wuerttemberg Emigration, Dutch to America, etc. Plus you'll have access to old directories, census documents, military records from the county, etc. Nothing beats the public library when it comes to free research.

rootsweb.com also. Just remember what is online should be used as a tool not as truth. You need to document your findings.
