It never said snake but serpent. We associate snakes with something creepy.God cursed it to crawl on its belly so we automatically assume it is a snake. For all we know it could have had beautiful legs.

It doesn't say devil, but when you study the rest of the Bible we understand it was the devil. The Garden of Eden, along with the rest of the world was perfect. Therefore, we can conclude that something else entered the world. The only other thing God had created with the ability to choose right and wrong were the angels in heaven. Thus the fallen angel, Lucifer, wanted to get back at God. So he decided to trick and corrupt Eve.
The Revelation answer above is also mentioning this occurrence.

The great dragon, crafty serpent, satan, snake, all refer to the devil. Lucifer (angel) fell with 1/3 of the angels. Since then they are referred to satan and demons. This is a good reason to read the entire Bible, not just verses in order to understand the whole and not just parts. Good question.

Hello, Ginger:
A profound fact in the Bible is that spirits can communicate through humans and animals. And although the Bible does not say the serpent was Satan, it implies such in Revelation 12:9:
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Interestingly, God chose a bronze serpent in the wilderness to save the murmering Israelites from from the venom of death. Jesus indicated that "as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."
Why did a symbol of sin represent our perfect Savior? Wouldn't lifting up an innocent lamb have been better?
The answer is simple, because as Jesus was lifted on the cross, all the confessed sins of the world were placed on Jesus by the father. It must have been terrible because Jesus cried:
"My Father, My Father, Why have you forsaken me?" Yes, sin separates one from God.
So, Ginger, let us not flirt around the tree of knowledge like Eve did. Drink from the unpoluted waters of God's Word and maintain a personal relationship with Him through prayer.
One more thing, just to build your faith, read a special publiction that proves Jesus is the messiah in the only part of the Bible that says it can not be understood until the end of the days at: www.reveldo.org/revealed.htm
Blessings and peace in Jesus, One-Way

The King James says (Rev 12:9 And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world; he was cast out into the earth: and his angels were cast out with him)In Genesis 3 it also calls it the serpent. And a serpent is a snake

The actual word for serpent translated is "ha-nachash" a noun used as an infinitive ( a form of the verb "be" as "to be"), in three senses: to polish (as brass), to practice divination;, To Shine. The ha-nachash means To Shine. Contrast this to II Corinthians where it says that Satan transforms himself into an "angel of light" (The Shining One), and you'll begin to understand how A&E were so easily deceived by the serpent who was then in the garden, and is now, known as Satan. The actual meaning of his original name, Lucifer, means "Light Bearer". It all makes PERFECT sense. When you add to all this that Satan is called in Revelation "that serpent of old", it all comes together. The word serpent has always had a negative connotation, as when we in modern times say that someone is like "a snake(serpent) in the grass". The common misconception is that Satan possessed the body of an actual snake. Only in fairy tales could that be true. No, it wasn't an actual snake that spoke to Eve. It was Satan.

(Revelation 12:9) So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.
From the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.
It was Satan who lied to Eve, Not a snake. But he can look like anything.

And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Christ.
For the accuser of our brothers,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.
They overcame him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
Therefore rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.
