It's not about being a gentleman, it's common courtesy, a good upbringing, good manners, it's decent and the right thing to do.

Having the class to apologize when you've done wrong, to anyone, is a sign of good manners, but not necessarily of being a gentleman.

Sincerely apologizing when you're wrong to anyone, is a sign of good breeding in a man OR woman.

Definitely. If a man can sincerely apologize (and mean it) for something he's done wrong, he's a gentleman.
