the doctor says its not too much of a concern but wut can cause red blood cell count to be high and what happens if its too high

That is a hemoglobin, as stated, not a hematocrit. High levels could be from anything that makes your body receive less oxygen (living at a high altitude, smoking), dehydration (less non-hemoglobin fluid in the blood), medications (Procrit), lab errors (probably the most likely reason) and other rare causes that would have other findings on your labs that I bet you don't have. Relax. Remember, "normal values" vary from lab to lab and only cover about 95 out of every 100 people who are all "normal."

It is not red cell count. It is hemoglobin percentage. 14.8gms per 100ml is considered normal. Normal means acceptable for all purposes. Slight increase occurs in well fed people specially if the food contains iron,folic acid and Vitamin B 12.

1.Living in a place with low oxygen (like high in the mountains),
2. Having a certain type of anemia which causes you to have lots of small blood cells instead of a normal amount of medium ones.
