Setting similar budgets for hobby expenses is the safest route. Then again, when I spent +$3000 on camera gear last year, I simply told my wife about it. Well, we talked about it for 10 minutes before I placed the order. We both have full time jobs, we both set cash aside for personal items (with me it's gadgets and with her it's clothing), and we didn't need the cash for important stuff. Case closed.

Get a new wife? No, ignore that. You will need to talk to her. Ask yourself what is this lens means to your wife? and use it as your marketing tool. You need get this lens because ... you can take better picture with family, and family photos are... priceless! Ask her how much $ is good picture of kids worth (if you have one)? Don't go into technical mumbo jumbo that she is not going to understand

Get a three-year (even five year) loan for the lens. Just pay a small amount monthly for the lens. Thats a great lens (f2.8) and it will last a lifetime.
