Definitely not on these boards. I read a book from 1999 which said 86% of U.S citizens were Christians. Only a few were atheistic. What do you think it's like now? Looking on these boards, it seems more like 75% atheist and 25% Christian.

And no comments like "darn, stupid atheists" from christians or "finally, we'll beat the stupid christians." from atheists, please!

Yes it is but it is growing. I don't know how the percentage of nonbelievers in this world can be known. I know of at least 5 personally who have never taken part in a poll.

No, those statistics are still accurate for the United States. But (1) this site isn't limited to the United States (2) Americans on the the Internet are mostly godless heathens.

Well, the last gallop poll I saw (from 2006 i believe) put the "non religious" at a whopping %14 now. I huge increase.

I will say that I think that people who really think about religion will often find atheism and those people are not less interested afterwards.

Surveys are funny things. For a long time statistics (census) in my country asked your religion, and then only gave you a choice of a few major ones. Atheism is not a religion of course and neither is agnostic.
The result of that is a definite skewing of the numbers.

its hard to know how many people in america are atheists, its worse than saying you're gay in some states. the polls currently show that about 11-12% of americans are atheists. I would say its actually about 20-30% because of people who are too afraid of friends/family/community.

wikipedia claims one billion strong for atheism that's hardly a minority although they probably still would like some respect and tolerance instead of hostility and combative attacks ..
Atheism is slowly gaining headway as being a socially acceptable belief .the doors of religious prejudice are hard and slow to bring down.

Atheists, at least in the U.S., make up at least 10%. We are a minority, but a bigger minority than the Jews.

If you regard someone who does not believe in your God an athiest, then the majority of people are athiests.

If you accept that there Gods other than yours, and you allow people to believe in them, then I would say that the majority of people are not athiests.
