that the Apostle John is the person scripture is referring to when it mentions "the disciple whom Jesus loved" like in John 13:23. I was asked this question today and would like some helpful input.

Thanks

Aquila. Read John 19:27. It puts an end to this John Mary issue, it says "...he."

Actually it says "...his."

It was determined by process of elimination. It seems John did not mention himself by name to prevent readers from seeing him as a focus of the Gospel story, thus diverting attention from Jesus.

It does not say this explicitly anywhere in the Bible. This is generally agreed upon by Bible expositors as referring to the author of the Gospel.

This is one of those things that can only be proved by Church Tradition.

St. John was the last living apostle, and his disciples all knew that he was the "disciple whom Jesus loved" because he told them he was.

St. John told us a lot of things that aren't included in scripture, and the Catholic Church has always treasured his words, as included in their sacred and apostolic Tradition.

Unfortunately, the rules the protestant reformers set up for themselves totally disclaim tradition, so OFFICIALLY, no protestant knows the answer to your question.

It’s not John, it’s Mary Magdalene. Read the gnostic scriptures to get a handle on the NT, it will clear up many things.

Matthew 11:11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
