NEVER blowdry before using them. That's using heat TWICE in a row, which is probably a bad idea. Only blowdry if your hair is wet in the first place. When setting on hot rollers, use thermal styling spray to protect your hair from the heat and hold the curls; it's like a hairspray that you can use before setting the hair. Don't use too much or your hair will feel sticky. You may not need hairspray when you're done with hot rollers. If you have naturally dry hair, you should probably moisturize your hair in some way a little before you put hot rollers on it. I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture leave-in conditioner or Sunsilk Hydra TLC 24/7 Creme.

Tips For Using Hot Rollers

If you're using heated rollers, it's best to start on dry hair. Water conveys heat a little too well, and you'll end up damaging your hair. Also, the rollers should be tight, and wet hair has far less elasticity-- another great way to damage your hair. Only use wet hair if you're using velcro rollers, or something otherwise NOT heated.

So start in the front with SMALL sections. Spritz with a medium hold hairspray. Pull your hair straight up, place the curler behind it at tip and roll down. When you pin it in place, make sure that roller is tight and not sagging and pulling the hair down-- the roots of your hair should be standing straight up. (If you still find that when your hair is curled its very heavy and pulls your hair down too much, gently backcomb the root of each strand of hair before putting in the curlers)

Once you've put them all in, wait until all the rollers are cooled to take them out. Spritz with hairspray again. If you find that your hair still looses its curl half way through the day, then roll these curls back up with your fingers after spritzing them with hairspray again. Bobbypin them back into place and let this second layer of hairspray set for a couple extra minutes.

For hot rollers you do not have to blow dry your hair. But I recommend trying it with and without blowing it dry to see how you like the different effects. If you blow dry well, it should be smoother if you do it just before using the hot rollers, and a bit "freer" or less controlled, if you do not. I think you will lose the effect of the blower drying if you use the rollers too long after wards. I am not familiar with Biosilk, I believe it is a retail product, which is not as good as professional products. I recommend Nexus, the best product made for hair, found in beauty salons.

Test how long your style lasts with and without a holding spray, and setting products. There may be different effects for each product you might like for different occasions. For example, the holding spray will keep your hair in place, so it might be best in more formal occasions.

What ever you choose, DO NOT use Aquanet -it is flat out garbage (except for runs in your stockings.) Have fun experimenting.
