It really started out as a sort of Utopian idea - all races worshipping together, a common economy, almost socialistic views on the world. Very innovative for it's time, really. People really thought Jim Jones was a faith healer - a fraud of course - and was something to everyone. He convinced people to sell everything they owned and join him in Northern California, giving him all their money, of course. Then Jim Jones just kind of slowly started going crazy, becoming paranoid. He and his followers founded Jonestown in Guyana. Kind of a giant commune, where they could be totally self-sufficient, and out from under the increasingly watchful eye of the media and the government. The problem was, once you were there, you couldn't leave. On Nov. 17, 1978, Congressman Ryan and several others, including a film crew, went to check it out after some family members asked for help getting their loved ones back to the US. The next day, when people started leaving en masse, Jones freaked out totally. He sent armed men to kill the deserters, including the Congressman, and then told everyone else that they had to die. They mixed a giant vat of Kool-Aid with cyanide, and made all the children drink first. Jones knew that if the kids were dead, the parents would put up little resistance. 909 people in all died on that day. Jones himself died from a gunshot to the head. Only 8 people actually escaped from Jonestown while the Kool-Aid was being passed out, and some 80 others lived who weren't there that day. It's a horrifying story.
