First, most people are dehydrated, tho they don't know it. For many it shows up as a craving they can't figure out...so they eat more.
Second, water helps your body flush toxins. Toxins that are not flushed from the body clog the major organs, causing metabolism to slow down, and weight to be gained.
Third, drinking a glass of water before a meal helps you feel fuller faster, so you eat less.
And no you wont weigh more...except maybe temporarily, till the water is flushed thru your system. But if you are drinking it as you should then you will be voiding more also so that it stabilizes.

Actually drinking 8 glasses (8 oz) glasses of water a day can help you loose weight by helping to get rid of excess water that your body retains. When you are not drinking enough water your body goes into a conservation mode and holds in more water. You can loose as much as two or three pound simply by increasing your water consumption. The extra water also helps your body wash out toxins. Aside from those reasons drinking 8 8 oz glasses of water a day will help you loose 10 lbs in a year. If the water is cold it will help even more.
The water will also help with blood pressure problems, coughs, dry eyes, constipation, insomnia, cancer and prostate problems.
As a side note you should drink 8 8oz glasses plus one 8 oz glass for every 25 lbs overweight you are. So for example if you are 50lbs overweight you should be drinking 10 8z glasses.
Let me stress that drinking 8 8oz glasses of water does NOT cause water retention as a matter of fact it helps relieve it. It tells your body you are not in a drought and that your body can release the extra water your body is retaining.

It is an important part of weight loss, but you have to do more than drink lots of water to lose weight. See a registered dietitian or nutritionist for food recommendations, and walk lots and lots. Have your family doctor check your health first, then get recommendations for the physical training you need.
Good luck.
