I went on to a trip with my academic bowl team, and we parked our car in a public parking garage. When were done and exiting the parking complex, the cashier said she only takes cash. None of the other members had cash, so I gave the driver nine dollars. He promised me to pay me back. Then a week later, when I mentioned it to him, he said he'll pay me back, then a week later, he still said he'll pay me back.

Then today I asked him again, he said the team already have trouble getting big amounts back, so my $9 will have to wait, and I may have the chance of never getting it back. (and worst of all, a very obnoxious guy on the side said "you are screwed")

I took some law classes before, and I know if it's like a large amount, I can always sue them, but $9 is not worth it going to court. I know it's not alot, but I'm not rich, and my family needs money right now, (and I'm in school) so I need to be careful with my money and I do not dare to waste a penny.

What should I do?

Why did the driver mention the team getting big amounts back? Is he someone who collects money for the team, like an officer or manager? If so, the next time you owe money, pay $9 less than you owe and tell him that that will resolve your debt. If not, explain to him that if you took the view that "your nine dollars will have to wait" he would have been in a lot of trouble in the parking garage. Ignore that dumb lout who said you are screwed. Nobody asked him.
If I were you, I would continue to ask him about that $9 every time I saw him until I got it back. That was just rude, to accept money from you when he was in need then refuse to repay it.

The driver should pay you back., himself, because he should have collected from everyone else right away. Your window of opportunity is gone.

However, did you learn a lesson? Maybe next time you will say nothing. Had you given only a few dollars, I'll be you'd see others pulling out a dollar or two to get home. It's only a $9 lesson. You could have lost hundreds for that lesson. You were lucky.

As for the ones saying: Get a life and such comments- they are most likely the ones that would take advantage of you. Watch out.

As for the nine dollars, I'd tell them this:

"Well, don't expect anything from me again. Since you don't want to pay me back, as my friend, then you aren't a good friend, in that case, get lost. I don't need you."

Then...from there, it'll make them think.. if they value the friendship - they'll pay you back, otherwise, they aren't worth your time. They're just taking advantage then.

Good luck!

I am afraid you will just have to cut your loses.

I lend my step daughter money all the time, promising to pay me back, and we are also very tight with money with a young baby and family to feed etc...... - I can't see you ever getting the $ back.

Unfortunately you were in a sticky situation at the time (car park) and if you didn't pay it you wold still be stuck there.

If you see him out somewhere, ask him to shout you a meal or beer (depends where he is) to make up for it.

It kinda depends on you. I'm glad some of these people have never been in a spot where $9 was a lot to them and sorry they aren't more compassionate to others not as lucky. If you feel it's worth it to you, hassle the guy every time you see him until he pays you. If not, just be sure he knows the Bank of Nandl is closed for future loans.

I understand your problem. Sometimes I lend people money and I regret it later because people say they will pay me back but they usually don't. So I suggest you should bother the person until he pays you back the money. It usuallly works.

You were generous but you did get played. Let it go.
Next time you are out with this bunch, hang on to your wallet with both hands. Better yet, find friends who don't mooch.

Other than not loaning money, there probably isn't much you can do. Just be sure that they know that you will not lend them money anymore.
