Hi.The most common loudspeaker is the moving coil speaker.A coil of wire is suspended in the magnetic field of a magnet. When a current from an amplifier is passed through the coil, a varying magnetic field is generated by the coil. The two magnetic fields interact causing movement of the coil. The coil is attached to a cone and moves back and forth. This compresses and decompresses the air thereby generating sound waves. This is a basic explanation of how a speaker works but a more detailed explanation can be found on the web.
Hope this has helped you.

they work on the soleniod principle. Send a current though a wire genterates a magneticfield. This field then is attracted or repelled by the field of the permenant magnet in your speaker. That cause the cone to oscillate back and forth. that motion moves the air which produces sound. if you want a detailed or technical explanation let me know.

Sound is produced by just moving some thing in air rapidly. What ever,.... Card board, metal plate, Bell surface.
But these are rigid things which will produce their charecterstic sound.

You know why?, when you physically excite them, they will loose their shape temporarily and regains it with in a particular time. Its difficult to change this time as it depends on elastic nature of the object.
This losing shape and regaining it, will crerate a presure distrubance in air. Which you will hear as sound.

These are heavier and thicker objects so they have high inertia (rigidity to move and rigidity to stop from moving)

Some thing is needed which can be moved rapidly in air easily in a controlled manner and can also be stopped easily, without the deformation in its shape. Such an object can displace the air and remain in its shape, so that it can be moved again immediately.

That is diaphram or Cone. By its shape, a cone can retain its shape when force is applied at its vertex. A light weight tough paper will have less weight and it can be moved easily.

Thats why a Paper cone is selected for the speaker. Paper will be reinforced with light weight carbon matirial for toughness.

But who will move the Cone?

A mechanism to apply force at its vertex is called Voice coil, which is nothing but a coil wound on a cylendrical pipe attaced to the vertex of the cone.
This coil magnetised when a electrical current is passed through it. We can reple or attract this magnect by using another magnet. which will surround this voice coil. When current is passing in one direction it will reple the coil, since coil is attached to the cone, it will pull the cone suddenly. When current is passing in another diection it will attaract the coil and teh cone is puhsed. This pushing and pulling action depends on how fast and how intencsively the current direction in the coil is changing.

This current is under the control of the power amplifier in a sound system. That sound system produces/changes this current at a frequency and intensity of the audio source like Cd player, micro phone tape player etc.

So Cone is also moved acording to current since cone is light weight it will have less intertia and power amplifier can control this easily at any frequency or intensity and makes it to vibrate as required by push pull action. This will create sound in air, which you listen.
