It really depends on your personal preferences. Manhattan is the most expensive. Personally, I like Queens.

Hi there, Yonkers is in Westchester county and you cannot access NYC by Subway from Yonkers, it is a separate train called the Metro North (also more expensive than a subway) Depending on what you want out of your living sitch depends on where you should live... if you want the city at your fingertips, and don't mind sharing an apt with someone Manhattan is where it is all at. Brooklyn is nice further into the borough but that means longer travel by subway to Manhattan. (in case you will be working in Manhattan) some areas can take up to 50 mins by subway! What's the point if you ask me, of living in a borough when the city is that far a ride. Queens is just not really fun, to me it is quite depressing, lot's of airport traffic constantly and every brick bullding looks the same! The Bronx is one of the rougher boroughs. There are really not too many really nice and safe neighborhoods there. Also very trafficky. My bet MANHATTAn or bust, honestly worth every penny for the extra rent a month...

1. Yonkers isn't a boro. Staten Island is the 5th boro
2. Cheap but not too safe: the Bronx
3. Expensive: Manhattan
4. Suburban like: Staten Island and Queens
5. Convenient: Brooklyn
My best bet, live in Brooklyn, unless you have the money you can live in Manhattan. If you prefer to buy a house then Staten Island and Queens are your best bets.

My dad grew up in Brooklyn. My aunt lives in Queens. Pick one of those. Manhatten is too expensive, the Bronx is suicide, and Staten Island is a garbage dump.

If you could afford it, Manhattan all the way, otherwise a quick train ride from queens.
Me personally, I couldnt live anywhere but Manhattan!!
Bronx, hell no
Yonkers, no chance
Brooklyn is cool but a longer train ride.

It depends what type of person you are, if you are a student hear for college, the best place to move is somewhere in NJ. In all the areas mentioned it is VERY easy to get into manhattan by train AND car, don't evenm worry
Manhattan if you like the dense urban environment.....and if you have the money! (avg home price $900,000 for 1 bedroom studio)
Staten island if you like the suburbs.
Queens if you like the denser suburbs with almost every house semi-detached.
Bronx (Most of it except northwestern neighborhood), if you like the "ghetto lifestyle", and gentrified highrises. But in terms of commute time, Bronx is the winner along with the Jersey City area.
Brooklyn, same thing as bronx except with less highrise apt's. Mostly crowded with tens and thousands of rowhouses and some highrise apts and semi-detached homes. (Most populated borough 2 million + people)
METRO
Nassau if you like slightly les denser version of Queens.
Suffolk, if you like "PURE" suburbs (until you reach Mastic), than it's 'semi-rural".
Jersey City, if you like the way less denser version of Manhattan but still like highrises, and commute of a few minutes, Jersey City can rape your pockets!
Newark, lesser dense ghetto than Bronx.
Yonkers, same as above.
S.W. Connecticut, if you like the "upscale lifestyle"/preppy and yuppie, and a close commute to NYC. This place will literally fvck up your pockets almost as much as Manhattan.
Atlantic City, a little further away, but move hear if you like gambling and adult entertainment, but, most of the residential communities are low-income.
North/Eastern New Jersey, same as Nassau basically but slightly more dense and cam be a little more industrialized.
Westchester, basically the same as Connecticut but more of a NYC "mentality".

I say Brooklyn, because that where I live. If you have the cash you should live in Manhattan.

I lived in Bayridge, Brooklyn, near the Verrazano Bridge. Nice and relatively safe.
Good food, shopping.
Park Slope is nice too.

Only you can decide what is the best community for you.
I can only tell you that Yonkers is not a borough, and Staten Island is.
