It is a descent airline. However, alot of employee morale is pretty low lately. This is due to their bankruptcy and cost cutting measures.
To the poster above who said they had never lost an aircraft, read this link. It is about NWA flight 255.

I think they are decent, but I'd take the Southwest airfares over comfort. I like to have enough to buy a candy bar when i have a lay-over, and the money I save does just that.
Statistically, they have had a good record, however, they were miss managed a few years ago which resulted in the companies bankruptcy. They recovered nicely from that. I do know that they were one of the last American airlines to get rid of the DC-9-10 and DC-9-30's. I think that using the time-tested airframe instead of overly investing in newer aircraft helped the company. I think all the DC-9's are retired now with Northwest, but I'm not sure.
In conclusion, Northwest is still a good airline who in the face of adversity was able to prosper.

Northwest is a decent airline though I think they have the oldest average age for their aircraft. Most airlines are pretty similar in that they charge you for boxed snacks and have done away with meal service unless it is an international flight. I would prefer JetBlue, Air Tran or Southwest but if I had to fly Northwest, I would not mind. They are a pretty safe airline to fly with.

Depends what you mean by good airline.
If you mean if the ride will go smooth, it depends on the pilot and how much time he spent on aircraft training. Most Northwest flights are smooth.
Service? That definetly depends on you, but I'll say they have good service.

I had a bad experience with Northwest losing my bags.
American seems to be my favorite to travel on.

NO!!!!!!!!! They no longer have there own mechanic's working the aircraft. As with anything when you contract our out source your work of any type the person doing the work does not care as much as they more then likely will never see the product or item again.

Depends on where your going. For trans-Pacific flights I do not care for any US carrier, as I find the Asian Carriers have much higher level of service and ammenities.

Now I wouldn't say it hasn't lost a plane at all, there's been a few accidents in its earlier history, but recently, I would say they have a very good safety record. Now, if your wondering about passenger opinions on the service, I reccomend you look here: http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/n_west.htm
