correction, mr. reereec, the Kinderhook plates are not the basis of the Book of Mormon; that was the "Golden Plates"

The Kinderhook plates were a joke by some people in Nauvoo to trick Joseph Smith into showing the world he was a fraud. They inscribed and oxidized some plates with a nail and acid and coated them with dirt, then buried them in a hill.

They were then publicly uncovered and taken to Joseph, who started to translate them and said that the Lord had revealed to him that it was inscribed by a descendent of Ham through the lineage of Pharaoh, and that it contained important information pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

After Joseph said those things, the jokesters told everyone that it was them, and then showed people how they had made the plates, and a couple thousand people left the Church over it and started an offshoot group, claiming Joseph was a "fallen prophet."

Well, yes and no. I read others who have done the research, and there is no evidence that Joseph Smith had any thing to do with the Kinderhook plates. I think he saw them, briefly, but there's absolutely no evidence that he ever tried to read them or translate them.

How can a Mormon not have heard of the Kinderhook Plates?!
They're only the basis for the Mormon Bible.... Wow! I'VE heard of them, and I'm an atheist!

Yes, I've heard of them they are a big hoax. Joseph saw them and said that he could translate them. More proof that Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
