It is so annoying. In essence, it is apologizing for a crappy answer. You should not answer unless you know it helps. Otherwise don't waste people's time. Any comments?

Well, I'm glad there are others who share my thoughts on this. I expected a majority of 2 pointer people saying, "I hope this helps." on my question.

Yes oracle,
I believe it was one of your questions that made me realize how rampant this "I hope this helps" crap was. It is like a signature for pathetic answers.

Sheez, who would have thought this question would cause such chaos? I guess I really touched a nerve in some folk.

Maybe when people say this, they deep down know they're giving a crappy (and non-helpful) answer, but by saying it, they think the asker will think that they're being friendly and sincere, and will ultimately pick their answer as best and give them 10 points.
The sentence above is horribly worded and very much a run-on, I'm afraid. Is it clear enough to understand my point? I know this won't help, lol.

It's called being nice and wishing the best for someone. It has nothing to do with "apologising for a crappy answer". Because we don't know the people and aren't always given all the info. we give the best answers we can and hope they help.
If your so fantastic, why bother even asking questions...lol! You really need to take some of your happy pills don't you. Maybe a psychologist could help you with your answers...but then you'd probably say they were 'crappy answers' too, just because you can't face the truth...lol:-)

I hope you know you fell into a trap of people not caring, or just repeating the phrase I hope this helps. To be honest, it does not matter if people put this as their ending phrase, I know I do all the time. I am no ahshamed of my answer being "wrong", no I like the fact that I am able to help another person out. Besides it is politie to end with a nice phrase, it shows that the person that answered your question isn't doing this to waste you time, it shows that this person actaully cared about you getting the right answer.
Well I hope this helped you bitterness to the phrase, "I hope this helps."

Usually when I say that I hope my answer helps, it is because the question has no good answer - like when someone asks how to get over it when their spouse cheats on them. There's nothing to be said that can possibly actually fix the issue. All you can do is offer a little advice and hope that it does, in fact, help a little.

I think some answer the best they can or as little as they can say IHTH and get points.
The most annoying to me is people who do not answer a question with anything pertaining to the question. or just give a yes or no with no details when you ask for a reason why they answered the way they did.

I hope this helps but....Haha no really yeah. Thats pretty lame either it's going to help or you just really want points. Like "how do I shave my cats hair into a mohawk" "Gee I hope this helps, kitties are cute" waht's even more annoying is when they get the best answer. Ahhh people.

Sometimes the asker doesn't have or give enough detail, so you try to answer the best you can-and you REALLY DO hope it helps.
