This involves the hand/wrist area where an IV was inserted . Should you have pain moving up the arm, swelling, soreness and tenderness all of which seem to be getting worse; and a lump or knot under the skin around the IV site? It's been a week since surgery. I'm concerned. Please all of you knowledgable people out there do you have any idea of what this is and what can be done about it? Please help!

This sounds like a superficial vein thrombosis. It doesnt sounds like it could be a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). Nevertheless, you might need a blood thinner as well as some antibiotics., but this is a wild guess. You def. must see a doctor and if you have no health insurance then contact the hospital where you had the surgery. I am sure that they will want you to come back so that they can have a look at it.

If nothing else, then it is certain that an infection is going on.
You must have it looked at especially if you are a diabetic.
Good luck.

Often times people have pain after removal of an IV. It sounds like yours is not normal. The increase of pain and the lump could be indications of inflammation of the vein. You need to see your medical doctor to make sure this is nothing serious.

Until you see your doctor apply ice packs at the IV site to help reduce inflammation. Apply for ten minutes at a time several times a day.
