Perhaps others misunderstood your question; are you asking about the names of plane manufacturers? - So that you can tell if it's a Boeing or an Airbus, or a Bombardier, etc? (Other answers have already covered all the different types of aeroplanes, or airplanes).
Well if this is the case, then I know the following commercial planes:
Boeing (American-built) - 707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and soon, 787 (Dreamliner). The biggest is the 747, followed by the 777.
Airbus (European-French, British, German, Italian and Spanish consortium) - 319, 320, 321, 300, 330, 340, and soon 350, and also 380. The A-380 will be the world's largest.
Lockheed (American-built, but no longer building commercial airplanes) - L1011(Tristar), Constellation, Electra. C5 (Galaxy), and C130 (Hercules) - military transports.
Douglas/McDonald Douglas (American-now assimilated into Boeing) - DC1, DC2, DC3, DC4, DC6, DC8, DC9, DC10, MD10, MD11, MD80, MD88. One of these (MD80 or MD88 became the Boeing 717 after Boeing's acquisition of McDonald Douglas).
Convair (American; extinct): 880, 990 (similar to the Boeing 707 and the DC8)
In the regional jet market we have:
Embraer (Brazilian-made): Brasilia, RJ135, RJ145, E170/175, E190/195,
Bombardier (Canadian-made): CRJ200, CRJ700, CRJ 705, CRJ900, CRJ1000, C110, C130, Q200, Q300, Q400.
Fokker/Fairchild (Fokker is Dutch, Fairchild is American): F24 (Friendship), F27, F40, F50, F70, F100
ATR (Canadian, I believe): Dash 8
BAE (British Aerospace-British): Avro RJ, BAE146, BAEATP, BAE748, Jetstream
Saab (Swedish-made): Saab 340, Saab 2000

Basically these are the ones you might see frequently at airports.

There are fighter/bombers and bombers as well. Powered gliders, uses power part time. Biplanes and triplanes from WWI era. Now there are also VTOL (vertical take off and landing), mostly experimental.
