a sphere is technically the best container for volume versus surface area. since spheres do not fit well packed in cases on trucks the next best shape would be a cube. Since advertising is everything for cereal competition, they have opted for a big rectangle with a large front to put all kinds of colorful imagery and pictures on to grab your attention. For cans, the reason is simpler, for processing the types of foods that go into a can, a simple stout cylinder is the best and it also allows ample room for labeling. A square can would be more efficient when loaded in cases on trucks but would slow down the manufacturing process greatly. some cereals are packed into cylinders as is the case of Quaker regular or quick cook oats. but again these shapes leave airspace between packages in cases.

Most are rectangular. But if you count oatmeal or grits, then it's a cylinder.
