Most believers believe that this event will happen in their lifetime. But so did those who lived 500 years ago and nothing. What if it doesn't happen in your lifetime or in a million lifetimes. What then?

It sometimes boggles my mind that even though we are a very intelligent species, we are also capable of believing things we know are not true, but will believe them anyway. As if faith is enough to alter the laws of nature.

What if He comes back tonight?

You’ve hit upon one of the many contradictions about religion in general. As an atheist, I view belief in a supernatural power as unreasonable. It is a mystery to me why, 300 years after the Renaissance, a vast majority do not believe in evolution, and still cling to the belief that the Earth was created 6000 years ago.

Of course, the great draw of religion is comfort, both during trying times (good), and the irrational belief that someone is inferior because they believe something different than another.
Take a look at Sam Harris’ “Letter to a Christian Nation” for more insight. A much shorter version of some of the themes in that book can be found in Sam Harris’ “Atheist Manifesto,” which you can Google. One his main themes is that atheism is not a philosophy or a doctrine, but just a refusal to deny the obvious.

This question proves the bible correct, and so does the first person who answered you. These 2 comments will run rampent in the end times before the return of the Lord. The biggest sign that we know it's soon is Israel becoming a nation. It tells us that when the people of Israel become a nation, the generation who see's that will not perish before the coming of the Lord. That happened in 1948, that's 59 years ago. The Lord returns after a 7 year period known as the tribulation. 59 + 7 = 66 years accounted for. How long do people live these days who were born in that time period? Time is quickly running out and many will not believe it until the bus leaves the station, they can get to heaven just the same...but they'll have to die first. The bible says *1* generation will not perish, and it gave many signs to look for so you knew it was coming soon.

Some 2,000 years ago, Jesus himself said there were those there listening to him live and in person who would see what is now termed the Second Coming. As is the natural process, they "went the way of all flesh" as have generation after generation after generation of believers and non-believers since then—Jehovah's Witnesses and their multiple dates included. The members of the John Frum cargo cult have the same problem: John Frum has not returned and is not likely to.

Fortunately, when the immediate literalism fails and people begin to thoughtfully, prayerfully reflect, they begin to look for deeper meanings. Then they begin to bear the rich fruits of relationship with both the Divine and the material world.

Have you ever read Daniel or Revelation? Obviously not. Some of the last prophecies have only happened within the last 40 years. Jesus will come back at the right time. God will wait til the right time. He wishes none to parish so He waits for more to come to Him. Let me give you a heads up of a prophecy in Revelation. Everyone will need a mark to buy and sell goods. How could they have implemented that years ago? It could not have been done. Now we have computers that can do over 1 trillion transactions a second. Now they can do that . The rise of the EU. The wars and rumors of wars. Hmmmm scoffing at that one. It states there will be many to scoff and say He will not come back. But my man it is at hand. Repent and be baptized. Peace out...........

Great question. If a million years from now people are still waiting for Jesus' imminent return in their own lifetimes, I'd be embarrassed to be human.

But it could happen. Especially if a series of calamities bring about a series of Dark Ages in which all knowledge is lost and superstition prevails.

Who says there's only going to be one "second coming"? Maybe he's been back many times.

The being in Revelation 1:12-18 seems very similar to the one in Daniel 10:4-6. I'm not sure that Revelation isn't just the demons having a field day at pretending to be God etc. They possibly felt comfortable with the apostle John knowing that he was a faithful servant of God and wouldn't hurt them. So they let off a bit of steam by boasting. (What else would a demon do for fun?)

So in Revelation, we are left being instructed to say "Come Lord Jesus." There's got to be a fair whack of an ironic sense of humour along with hubris in that, compared with scriptures like 2 Peter 3:4. Why the emphasis on virginity? They're puritans boasting or else they're not and they're being facetious.

I'm not buying the intense, prolonged persecution of first-century Christians either as reported by Tacitus. I think the criminals who deserved "extreme and exemplary punishment" who were being called Christian as if to kill two birds with one stone - Tacitus writes: " Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of a charioteer or stood aloft on a car. Hence, even for criminals who deserved extreme and exemplary punishment, there arose a feeling of compassion; for it was not, as it seemed, for the public good, but to glut one man's cruelty, that they were being destroyed." This sort of thing happens today with paedophiles.

Those who trust in their father's inheritance to them of superior creativity genes are at the greatest risk of missing the warning signs of Christ's impending judgement on a regular basis. These secular events, as described by Tacitus, and perhaps also the Reign of Terror, the Night of the Long Knives, and the bloody retribution against the Spartans after the Battle of Phyle, are the sign that Jesus' attention is turned towards the earth. Christians lift their heads up because they know their deliverance is getting near.

I don't waste a minute worrying whether He will return in my lifetime or not, I just know He WILL return. He promised, and He only speaks the truth. If I die, I'll go to Him, and if He comes before I die, I'll still go with Him. It's a win-win either way!

He wont be able to come back because we wont let him .... Why ??? because we wouldn't believe him if he was ... How would you expect him to be ?
we are all so sophisticated in all areas of information and magic technology , even the Evangelists that perform miracles , could JESUS do better ? what kind of miracle would he have to do that we almost can do in some form of technology , Would we believe him if he is humble ?
would we believe him if he's poor or rich ?. Jesus just doesn't have a chance with us today , that's why he did it 2000 years ago when we were backward bumpkins flaying in the desert .

then maybe it'll happen in a million and one lifetimes. thats where faith comes in. some people have been through so much in life, that Jesus is all that they can believe in. Even though we know that it may not happen soon, i believe and so do many others that He will come back.

How many people do you know that live on the streets? or used to be alcoholics and drug addicts? i know some... their lives got turned around by belief, by faith. they now go to weekly bible studies and teach children and teenagers how awesome Jesus really is. I believe that they couldnt have turned themselves around by themselves and that they had help. thats why i believe...=P
