Er, okay, apparently by "discernment" you meant "ability to repeat empty slogans that I was told to repeat". I'm sorry - I thought you were talking about discernment.

Yes. This is one gift God gives to anyone. It is obtained by studying the scriptures, which in turn gives wisdom. That together with the Holy Spirit will give you discernment. It's not a gift that God just zaps you with. It grows in proportion to letting the Word become a living part of you. And it will surprise you how you know certain things. I might add, it is not a gift to use against others....it's for your own personal benefit so you act, or react, with wisdom. It's is another way the Holy Spirit helps you & protects you from evil. Even if you never read any other scriptures except Proverbs, you would obtain a certain amount of discernment. It is something that God wants all His children to have & He gives it freely to anyone who wants to know Him better. It's just one of the many ways He blesses His children and takes care of them.

A good discerning mind is one that is guided by the Creator. You should always think of the possibilities and consequencies when you decide and choose. That is but logical. There are rules established by God and of men for what is good and bad, beneficial and harmful. Don't rely on instinct, most probably instinctive decisions are selfish ones. Just put yourself in someones shoes to view from a different perspective. Go for what is good.

Okay, let me say what discernment is. The gift of discernment is the ability through the Holy Spirit to know a person's spiritual heart, even if they are hiding it. You can see depression, anxiety, doubt, fear, suicidal, lust, greed, lying spirits and more. Also, you will be able to see into the spiritual realm. You will see maybe angels and demons. You will be able to tell the different types of demons which are abiding with people. For example, the first day I went to work at the Paris hotel. I heard a woman and a man talking about gifts of the spirit. I got in on the conversation and I told her about discerning of spirits. She did not know much about it. She said how does it work? And I told her you know things about people which only God could know. So, she said tell me something about myself that only God could know. I said okay, I just won't tell you one, but two, or three. Then I said three. I told her you have anxiety, low self-esteem, and your insecure about yourself. She immediately became angry and said, "that's a lie!!". She had some dishes in her hand and slammed them down. She left and came back and said, "Who told you"? I said remember only you and God knew that. Then she said, "Oh yeah". But she was amazed. You strenghthen your discernment by prayer to God asking Him to perfect that gift in you. The Lord will begin to put you in situations where you will begin to learn to discern people's hearts. As you prove faithful to use it, God will increase you. Also read scriptures which talk about discern.

brother william branham had the sign of a prophet which was being able to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. this was not a Gift. it was the actual works of christ manifested thus fulfilling the scripture, the works that I do shall you do also. Works and gifts are not the same which is the deception of today.
people can operates all the gifts without coming to repentance but to manifest the works of christ, God has to grant repentance and the believer must be one with God as Christ and God are one. thus fulfilling Christ's prayer, let them be one as you and I are one. www.branham.org i recommend reading his life story(april '59), exposition of the seven church ages, and revelation of the seven seals(march '63). also www.leevayle.net series on godhead, rapture, paradox, and presence are very good. you may purchase all 1182 of bro. branham's sermons at www.daysofthevoice.com for $15

through prayer. when one has discernment about someone or something, then you must pray. and through prayer, and the continued studying of the bible, you will become more sure of the discernment when it happens. whenever you discern something............you really should check it against scripture. God never gives you discernment about anything that does not agree with His word!

god bless!

Spiritual discernment : calling on the Holy Spirit to lead or give direction on a matter. It is how the Spirit shows the church or its people what God wants them to do and be.

There is discernment of :

gifts,
spirits,
actions,
intents,
the spirit of the times we live in.
Discernment is more than just a skill. Discernment is a gift from God before it is anything else. Yet there are clearly skills that are put to use in doing it, and you can become better at it through training and experience.

Discernment is more than just a process. Even for the most 'material' or 'nitty-gritty' matters, there is a Spirit at work nudging us, leading us, even pulling us by the nose ring. Even for the most 'spiritual' matters, there are disciplines, methods, processes, means, and tools that the Spirit can work through to help us discern rightly. Discernment isn't usually a sudden zap from beyond, but something that emerges from hard work.

These are the main things to look for in discerning about something:

it is governed by love, for if it is not, it's worthless (1 Cor 13:1-3);
it centers us onto Jesus the Christ and Lord (1 Cor 12:3), and His good news;
it directs us to Scripture, not away from it (Isaiah 8:19, 20);
it builds up the church and its members (Ephesians 4:11-12), giving it power, wisdom, character, boldness, and unity.
it helps create in us a love of righteousness, a heightened sense of sin, and a turning away from known evil.

This 'Scripture principle' is not there to hold the Spirit in chains. It is to be used in the light of freedom in Christ, knowing that Scripture does not directly address most matters. Instead of demanding direct 'Scriptural warrant' for a practice or course of action, it's better to seek these :

that Scripture does not speak against it;
that the practice or teaching conveys the Gospel, and is fully in keeping with the root and heart of Christian belief found in Scripture;
that it turns the focus onto Christ, not persons, ideas, ideologies, organizations, wondrous signs, or activities;
that it is truthful, not rooted in a lie or distortion.

One of the keys to discernment is surrender. If we treat "I" as the emperor of all things, we won't be in the right place to find out what God wants of us. In fact, that selfish view of existence lies at the heart of sin : we act as if we're God, even though we certainly know better. The emperor 'I' has no clothes. So we need to set aside what we want and what we've been taught, and join with Jesus in His prayer in the face of His most ultimate decision : "Yet not as I will, but as You will." (Matt 26:39).

Another key to discernment is a 'sense of peace' about something. That peace must take place within the rest of the framework of discernment, or it's not divine. Yet the absence of such peace is, by itself, bad news. Such peace and security comes and grows with prayer. Peace is a gift that God is more than happy to give. God wants us to have some sense of security about what we do. Since God is not a God of confusion, it will not do in God's purposes for God's followers to be confused, or be confusing.

Some hints that confirm:
--- a chance encounter with just the right person;
--- a persistent, growing thought or conviction;
--- something from the Bible comes to mind;
--- something said in conversation that just sticks;
--- an opportunity suddenly opens up.
--- it 'bites back', becoming harder to stop the more you or anyone else tries to hold back.

These hints mean nothing by themselves, but can mean a lot when taken together.
