When you line breed, you specifically plan to "set" characteristics in the progeny. Sometimes the breeding does not go to plan, and the characteristics you wanted the progeny to inherit do not come through, while some previously recessive (or hidden) characteristics can come out. advatages:You know what you are getting (mostly).
It gives you the opportunity to "set" desired characteristics in your lines which you hope will be easier to replicate in future generations
disadvatages:Sometimes it does "set" some characteristics in your lines that you don't want. These then are usually very hard to lose.
Sometimes it doesn't work, and none of the progeny are worth carrying on with. In such case, the progeny are best spayed/neutered and placed in pet homes.
I dont line breed myself but alot of breeders do.

I have bred a buck rabbit back to his daughters, his grand daughters and so on for 7 years. Because he had such a great bloodline with no defects, he produced beautiful bunnies.
Dogs are another story. You should only breed a dog no more then once a year, and you might only have 1-9 puppies to choose from. You really have to watch the temperament of the puppies.
With rabbits, you eat your mistakes so the bloodline improves rapidly. With puppies, defected puppies are saved by going to the vet, and in time, this genetic defects will be passed on to their offspring. Think of bad hips in labs.
All of the different breeds of dogs today were started by breeding closely related dogs together in the past. Unless you know the genetic background of your dogs, and what if any defects are present, I would not breed too closely related dogs together.

In the very best circumstances nothing if done by people who know what they are doing. In the very worst deformations of pups at birth and internal deformations, early death of a dog.
Line breeding should be left to the professionals.

As a former breeder, I can attest to the fact that line breeding is the only way to hang on to the top notch pedigree as long as you outbreed once in a while so you don't get to close to inbreeding. Some show dog breeders even do the inbreed thing then kill the pups. They just do it to see where the good genes are coming from. Sick, huh? Never breed puppies from the same parents but different litters, never littermates, you can do grandfather-granddaughter-fine and viceversa

WTF is a "PUPPLY"????
Line breeding is a tool/method used by REPUTABLE/KNOWLEDGEABLE breeders-in ALL domesticated species- to ENHANCE breed characteristics!
"Locks-in" those desired traits.
