America has wanted a new government in Afghanistan since at least 1998, three years before the attacks on 11 September 2001.
Within four years the US military had overthrown the government of Afghanistan, and the construction of the Caspian Sea oil pipeline by US oil corporations had begun.
is the 'war on terror' is being used as an excuse to further US energy interests in the Caspian?

The US.gov wanted a new gov in Afghanistan much before 1998. Fact is the CIA was active in Afghanistan during most of the old Soviet occupation - assisting the Mujaheddin - remember them? The freedom fighters, who's role was taken over by the Taliban!
Control of Afghanistan is in the hands of the terrorists. We keep boosting the number of soldiers there in the field but to no avail it seems to me. You should take into account that the Red Army lost some 30,000 dead soldiers there. All that massive firepower tanks the lot, it all came to nothing in the end.
Why? Because the people of Afghanistan fear the Taliban and when ordered by them to supply this or that food etc., they do it unquestioningly - these people, for want of a better word are simply 'serfs'. Slaves in all but name, who do the bidding of their masters. If the masters are the Taliban, which in some areas of Afghanistan must be the case, then the people obey them.
The war on terror is probably more to do with the control and capture of oil than anything much else. It certainly does not seem to have much with the freedom of the people of Afghanistan. Freedom from what exactly? The poppy fields continue to yield their deadly harvest and nothing much can be or is being done about that.

We were winning in Afghanistan before Obama took over and more troops were not necessary. Now that Iraq has been secured the terrorists now have joined the front in Afghanistan. It's a change in the scale of the Taliban with their new support. But, I'm sure they are thinking that Obama will say Uncle.

I believe the USA had every right to invade Afghanistan, and if Bush had not gone into Iraq illegally, Afghanistan would now be a lot more stable. The resources wasted in Iraq could have being much more effectively utilise dragging Afghanistan out of the dark ages instead of throwing Iraq back into the arms of religious zealots.

You have hit upon something no one has put to question, the involvement or 'war on terror' in Afghanistan. Though I support the destruction of the Taliban, terrorists of their own kind, against the people of Afghanistan, your point of the U.S. furthering energy (oil) interest in the Caspian is an excellent one. It would seem that the U.S. could use the money being spent in Afghanistan, to a concentrated effort to built renewable energy resources within the U.S.

Yes of course..
You must look at the world map & see that Afghanistan is to the east of Iran & Iraq is to the West.
We have Turkey to the North & the Gulf States to the South.
All with American presence.
Iran has seen this threat & know whats coming to them.
The war on terror will end when the US feels that it is right or the oil runs out

Of course it's a war on terror.
It's very similar to the war against the Japs.
Both the nips and the hajis attacked us on our on soil without declaring war. That provoked us into attacking them, they deserve to be punished for the murder of american civilians.
If we did nothing they would attack again with more devastating consequences.
America didn't overthrow the Taliban, the Afghan people did that themselves (Northern Alliance).

It's another adventure from a distance for safe old Bush.
If he, and cogress, were serious about it, they would put sufficient resources into it to get the matter dealt with. As would our own beloved Mr. Blair.
They really do deserve one another.
It just seems such a total shame that the people dying are dying for all too little.
That region will return to being the region it wants to be, just one second after the last foreign soldier leaves it.
