God created man in his image--very good statement and true.
so how come we look so much like monkeys--Have you looked into a mirror lately. My tail is big but not long and I sure can't hang by it.

besides the fact that i dont look like a monkey,the passage in genesis is referring to the soul of man and not the flesh since God has no need for a body per say.

Imp, God both "created" and "made" things; And things made are seen as good only x 6, very good the 7th time.
God did NOT say let us create man.
God did say: "let us make man".
Two options are also given for compare-i-son:
- "in our image": the before (created imperfect): old
- "after our likeness": the after (made perfect): new
One other option is later also mentioned, about "made":
One proselyte is "made": twofold: "more the child of hell".
So we have a new and dead way & a new and living way.
We also have three things to sort out: an old and two news.
Such is also as sorting out (great -vs- greater) -vs- greatest.
Such is allegorically as sorting out (law -vs- law) -vs- grace.
Only the "greatest" of "three" things never fails a test. Selah.

it was the spirit of man in genesis ch 1 that was created in the image of God and His Son. then He created a flesh body in genesis ch 2 for the spirit of man. the flesh man was created in the image of beasts.
like around the spirit of God was wrobed by four living creatures.

God created man in his image and likeness not meaning we look like him but our spiritual personalities are like his, but because of sin our personalities have become corrupted and that is why man is no longer perfect in the sight of God.

Created in his image refers to man's ability to create things as a junior partner to God.. Animals cannot create things. Don't confuse the speicific authorities given to man with how we look in the mirror.

you are thinking literal meaning
do monkeys have brains? do they think? they can be taught but they dont learn spontaneously
do they trim their hairs like women wax their skins?
do they use spoon and fork?
do they complain when there is too much traffic? when the food is bland? when it suddenly rains when they did not bring their umbrellas?
do humans eat lice taken from another human? do normal humans they show they butts in public and feel proud of it?
maybe YOU look like a money but no normal person will admit to looking like one. he'd rather look like george clooney or brad pitt; jennifer aniston or debra messing than a monkey
