I have a set of NHT bookshelf speakers (SuperOne) but a really lousy receiver, surrounds, and subwoofer. I'd like to upgrade my system bit by bit, on a budget.

What kind of receiver should I get? The one I have now hisses all the time. I'm very much an audio newbie.

To clarify: I know what a receiver is and how to find them on Amazon, eBay, or Best Buy. I'm looking for recommendations of brands or models that would be a good match for NHT speakers. Thanks!

The super ones were great speakers (I used to sell them), designed by audio legend Ken Kantor. Nice, smooth sound. Personally, I like them better than the new NHT with the metal tweeters. I think the best match for these classic speakers would be one of the Denon receivers. Yamaha does not really bring out the high frequencies as well and this is something you really want with a soft dome tweeter. Harmon Kardon sounds great with the old NHT but they have a reputation for service problems. Onkyo makes a great receiver too, but I think Denon is a better match for your Super One's. I'm not sure of your budget or I would give further thoughts on which receiver.

Yamaha makes a great product with natural sound. Try the RX-V461 ($350) or the RX-V361 ($250) but stay away from the HTR series from the big box stores. My strong recommendation is to spend a little more than the two I mentioned due to the greater power output. The good thing about Yamaha is that they have various price points yet still use their high quality circuitry. Another tip is to wait until these receivers are being replaced by the newer version and you can usually get a great (unadvertised) deal.

Any good quality reciever will work well with NHT speakers. It is not necessary to "match" speakers and reciever. Having said that, try to find a good condition used Onkyo or Denon receiver (or Marantz). They are top notch.

Most people recommend Denon or Onkyo receivers. But i would buy one of the NAD receivers because they sound like an expensive audio only amplifier.
You can pick up a good one for around $500 if that is within your budget.

There is a NAD high end A/V Receiver on ebay for $399 which i highly recommend. The normal retail price is about $1000.
