I bought two salmon filets from a grocer this weekend (Saturday). How long will they keep before going bad? They smell well.. very fishy right now.

OK I cooked the filets, but the smell was totally unappealing so I threw them out. Thanks for all the good answers.

You should really cook fresh fish the day you buy it. You may be able to hold it over until the next day. No fish is suppose to smell like fish, so if it smells, just throw it away.

Salmon when purchased should not smell fishy. You cannot be sure how long the store actually kept it before you purchased it. I would wash it and use it immediately because of the fishy smell. After washing in cold water use some lemon juice on it to take away the fishy odor.
You could try to return them if you have a bill.

If fish smells fishy, it's old. Either cook and eat it tonight or pitch it.

In the future, store it in a zipper plastic bag on top of a bed of ice in a bowl.

get your finger tip and touch the sides, look at your finger tip very close when you take it off the side slowly, if a strand of mucous strings from your finger, throw it away.
