Starting in your freshman year of high school is a great idea in searching for college scholarships. There are things that you can do to increase your chances of getting one in the future. Good grades and SAT scores do pay with most colleges in the form of merit scholarships, and most states do have grant and scholarship programs for those with good grades. Also, get involved in your school and community with activities and clubs because it can help you get scholarships. I will list some free places to locate college scholarships, but some are limited to certain grades.
First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.
Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web. This can be done any time.
Third, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships and state scholarships & grants. This is to be done in your junior and senior years of high school.
Fourth, fill out the FAFSA form after January 1 of your senior year of high school. It will tap into state and federal grants along with scholarships from the college itself. It is need based. However, it taps into the federal work study program which gives valuable work experience and money.
Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites, but the best I have located is Scholarship Experts since they have a very thorough and lengthy survey to complete compared to Fastweb. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website. This can be done any time.
Good luck!

tuition= cheapest thing in college, at least for me, with a scholarship and grant, but even without them tuition is still on the low end of things. Rent and food (yep, food costs add up quickly) are the cash guzzlers. Rent+utilities+food= $800 a month easily. You're new "living on my own stuff", like a computer, desk, furniture, etc. and then your other things like kitchen stuff and personal cleaning stuff. then gas if you're going to have a car. Then you're going to want to have fun, eat out, take trip to the lake or whatever, paid dues if you're going to be in an organization; clubbing aint cheap after 11. Soon you're going to realize the real cost of things, and it's all expensive. As to how I pay for this, well my tuition doesn't even make it in to the budgeting, with a prepaid plan and the scholarship I didnt have to pay out of pocket. my grant goes towards everything else, and my parents usually help with half my rent. I don't have the discipline or desire for a job, with a double science major and all, though it would really help. However, I do make some cash by selling old textbooks when I have to. Also at my university, they have these social science experiments all the time, you just sit in front a computer and answer stuff or whatever. I do them when they fit in my schedule since they usually over lap with classes. Just this week I made $25 for showing up to one. you should def look into those kind of things.

First, I would like to commend you on taking the initiative and jumping ahead of the game toward your education. There are many websites that are useful to high school students. Are you planning on staying inside the state? If so you could do a search within your states educational means. Also try looking up a field of study that interest you because alot of scholarships could come from an area of study that you are considering with specific college or universities. But here is a range of different sites to visit...good luck on your future, and May God Bless You!

look outside the box while you may want to go to specific schools apply for general scholarships from organizations and companies that are local to you as those scholarships can usually be applied to any school and are not just limited to the scholarships offered by the school. This is the best way to go plus apply for scholarships online http://www.win-college-scholarships.com ... gives away a 10000 scholarship every 3 months that can be used at any school in US.
