It sure does include selfishness. My understanding of sin is separation from God thru wanting to serve the flesh and refusing to rid ourselves of the old Adamic nature in order for The Lord to change us into a new creation. We cannot overcome sin in our own strength which I believe religion tries to do. I believe we all need FAITH in God/ Jesus, not religion to change us and save us. Religion is man's attempt to reach God in His own strength. Faith is God reaching down to us thru His Son Jesus to love and save us. God bless!

Sin is the transgression of the law. The ten commandments is a law, known as Moses Law. But when Jesus magnified the law. The commandments now is love God with all your heart, mind and soul. Then love your neighbor as yourself. So it is a law to love. So the children of God is commanded to love, as God is love.
Uncaring and inconsiderate towards others is a sin.
We don't have to be as rich as Bill Gates to donate millions of dollars to show our goodness.
We all have the capacity to do simple act of kindness to our families, neighbors, co-workers and other strangers. We should not let the opportunity come to pass.

(1) There are things that the Bible specifically mentions and declares to be sin. Examples of such lists include: Proverbs 6:16-19; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. There can be no doubt that these Scriptures present the activities as sinful, things God does not approve of. Murder, adultery, lying, stealing, etc. – there is no doubt that the Bible presents such things as sins.
(2) The more difficult issue is in determining what is sinful in areas that the Bible does not directly address. When the Bible does not cover a certain subject, we have some general principles in His Word to guide us. (a) When there is no specific Scriptural reference, it is good to ask, not whether a certain thing is wrong, but rather if it is definitely good. The Bible says, for example, to "redeem the time" (Colossians 4:5). Our few days here on earth are so short and precious, in relation to eternity, that we ought never to waste time on selfish things, but to use it only on that "which is good, to the use of edifying" (Ephesians 4:29).
(b) A good test is to determine whether we can honestly, in good conscience, ask God to bless and use the particular activity for His own good purposes. "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). If there is room for doubt as to whether it pleases God, then it is best to give it up. "For whatsoever is not of faith is sin" (Romans 14:23). (c) We need to remember that our bodies, as well as our souls, have been redeemed and belong to God. "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19,20). This great truth should have a real bearing on what we do and where we go with our bodies.
(d) We must evaluate our actions not only in relation to God but also in relation to their effect on our family, our friends, and other people in general. Even if a particular thing may not hurt us personally, if it harmfully influences or affects someone else, it is wrong. "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak... We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves" (Romans 14:21; 15:1). (e) Remember, finally, that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, and nothing else can be allowed to take priority over our conformity to His will. No habit or recreation, or ambition can be allowed to have an undue control over our lives -- only Christ has that authority. "All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12). "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Colossians 3:17).

1. You shall have no other God before me.
When they say God is jealous, it is because He wants you to be giving the credit where it is due. He created all things physical that we know and allowed it all to come into existence. So when you make someone or something more important than God and your relationship with him, it is a sin and angers God.
2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Seem pretty self-explanitory!
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Basically means replacing a swear word and using Gods name like a swear word...Not a very nice thing to say or do. That is also a sin.
4.Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Just another way to show your respect to God, for all that he has done for you. He just asks that you take time and think of him and praise him, and talk to him through prayer. I know that part of this law is different now since the crucifixion & resurrection...But I do not know as much about this one. Sorry. I like going to church on Sunday and taking a day off!
5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
God wants us to respect those around us especially our parents, whether they deserve it or not, it is a way to demonstrate love, kindness & forgiveness, and follow in Christ’s' example.
6. You shall not murder.
That one also seems pretty explanatory… But you should not take another’s life, because it is not our right to do so. Only God can take a life, or give it.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
Actually you may be surprised to know that for someone to have committed adultery all you need to have done was look at another person lustfully or in a sexual manner, whether or not they are married. Having sex was the customary way to consummate a marriage, so if you have sex with someone before you are married technically in God’s eyes you are married to that person…consequently if you breakup with said boy-friend or girl-friend and sleep with someone else that is also adultery, etc.
8. You shall not steal.
Anything that you have taken no matter what the value that you were not legally allowed to take or didn’t have permission is stealing!
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Now neighbor is not just the person you live directly next to it is anyone whom you share this planet with. So this commandment is really saying do not lie! Lying always causes more problems than it helps, and they keep growing & growing, until it is out of control or you look like a jerk for not keeping your story straight and getting caught in it!
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s."
Basically it is saying that you shouldn’t even think about the grass being greener on the other side of the fence. That God wants you to be content with what you have. That’s not to say you can want something for yourself, but you should never want anything more than what God wants for you in your life.
Know this though God gave us these commandments to show us that we couldn’t keep them. And to show us our sinful selves. Know that Romans 6:23 says: For the wages of sin is death,…
Clearly not just about being selfish!

Sin is "missing the mark".
Murder would be obvious...
Adultery, by definition is one too.....
As a Christian matures, he learns that missing the mark also means to do a good thing, when the time is right to do a better thing.

I think sin is the willful disobedience to God. It is allowing the rewards and punishments of this world to control us. If we fail to do good then it is likely because of fear. Fear means that we're not trusting God. If we do our good deeds because we like the feelings of self-esteem that they bring, then that also is sin.

All sin is bad, however, there are different degrees of badness, (sin) And the degree or repentance should logically compensate with the degree of deviance.
