Techically you could skip a year. They are not going to come and hunt you down on April 18th, but you are asking for some serious trouble. So in short NO do not do that.

You can file for an extention if you fill out the form 4868 and send it in BEFORE April 17th. This automatically gives you until October to file. If you need longer than that you must apply and they must approve anything past that.

However, if you owe taxes they are still due on April 17th. If you pay after that you will owe penalties and interest. If you do not File an Extention or the actual taxes and you owe you will also owe a huge penalty on top of that.

For the 27,593rd time this tax season, no you can't do that. If you don't file by April 17th, you'll start racking up penalties and interest for late filing and late payment if you owe anything.

I just did that, but I'm owed a refund for both years. I think that's the only time you are allowed.

You are not allowed to do that, but if you have a refund there is no penalty. You even get interest on the refund that you receive late.
