Thinning will not damage the hair. I think it is a really good idea to thin it. The scissors simply just cut in certain places and make the hair thinner. I have done this and would recommend it to anyone. Layers are very nice because then the hair is more spread out and is not so clumped together. Layers starting at the shoulders would be really good, but it depends on what you want. When you go see a hair stylist ask them before they cut your hair, they will be happy to explain it all to you.

no if anything it will make it healthier go with long layers first then if you want to go shorter you always can. Advice dont do too many things to your hair at once side bangs are a good idea and are in style but styles come and go.

yes, dont do it, it will start to grow back and the short hair would stick up, and it looks like a mess

Not at all, all you are doing is cutting it
