street ryda,

Depending on your weight and conditioning now, you can do both, and at the same time.

Most of us really don't have to eat more in order to become more fit and muscular. We in the West generally eat enough and to spare. The usual "2000 calorie diet" is much more than most of us need unless we're Army Rangers or marathoners. If you're pretty normal now, you can simply work out and become much more fit, strong, and muscular just on what you're eating now.

In fact, you can probably cut down a bit and lose weight while you work out and not only gain muscle mass but also become much more "cut" at the same time.

Just remember that, at first, you're going to think that you need as much or more than you've been eating simply because you are used to it. The brain is an important participant in what and how much you eat, and you have to train it to recognize what you need rather than depend on what you're used to.

You may learn to recognize true hunger. When you are really low on blood sugar, you'll learn to know it, and that's when you need to eat something more.

But don't worry about whether to lose weight or to bulk up first. Do both at the same time. Don't be a slave to the scale. Your weight will go down and up (maybe) depending on what and how you do this.I enjoy working out and running, and I don't care what the scale says, because I'm right where I was in high school and with a low body-fat content. I simply watch what I eat and train every day. Weight training and running will work you top and bottom and make you into real eye candy for the ladies.

Good luck.

What will happen if you attempt to gain muscle mass is there will be a weight loss as the fat is burned and the muscle mass starts to increase. There will be a point that the weight will stop coming off and the weight will slowly but steadily increase depending on how much and what type of workouts you do. Generally speaking muscles weigh more than fat on a body. As you lose your fat and tone up, you will look far better, be stronger and probably weigh the same if not more. It all depends on what you want to accomplish with the weight loss, muscle mass add on. I suggest starting slowly with work outs and watch what you eat and how much you eat. This is a long term deal, so don't give up. Good luck.
