I really won't be, but my daughter might be late filing. She usually gets a refund.

Since she will be in a refund, just file a form 4868 and you will have until October 17th to finish the return. Some states accept the 4868 as an extension also, but you would need to check. If you might owe money to a state, be sure to pay at least that amount or you will be charged interest and penalties.
Here's a link to the form:

See the filing instructions on the last page on where to file without a payment.

If she is going to be late filing then she should go online now and get the form and file for an extension. Without it her refund may be reduced through late filing fees.

You can file for an extension. If you owe any money you have to pay it at that time. If she's due a refund don't sweat it, there's no penalty as long as you are getting a refund.

If she's late filing and likely to receive a refund, then she won't have a penalty. If, however, after filing she finds that she does owe, then she'll be penalized with late fees.

If you have a refund coming, nothing will happen UNLESS the IRS thinks you actually owe. For that reason, you should ALWAYS request an extension if you can't file on time.
