Anyone ever taken Xanax, Lexomil, Valium, Ativan, or Klonopin.
Anyone who has taken them compare there effects to being drunk or buzzed. I have social anxiety and drink when I have to go to a crowded bar or party. I know the effects of alcohol are less inhibitions and I guess euphoria. Is it similiar with these medications?

The answer is YES. The drugs you listed are called benzodiazepines and work similarly to alcohol in your body.

Both substances work on your GABA receptors, where GABA is your Central Nervous Systems inhibitory neurotransmitter. In english, GABA puts the breaks on your stress reaction, therefore making you less inhibited (or less anxious).

Both are extremely addicting and while you can't overdose on benzodiazepines, combining them with alcohol can certainly kill you (or put you in a coma).

Benzos are certainly a much healthier way to treat your anxiety condition. While they are easy to get a hold of and used recreationally, I would advise that if you decide to use them, do it under a Dr's supervision.

Have taken xanax ativan, valium, and klonopin none of them being prescribed directly to me I can't say that any of them gave me a feeling of being drunk I think of all of them I liked ativan the best truly helped with anxiety I used to call it my happy pill take one and the world is a far better place valium made me a bit hyper xanax just made me confused klonopin had very bad effect made me quite depressed but keep in mind that none of these were prescribed to me by my Dr. and that they are all very addictive if you suffer from social anxiety and are drinking alcohol to help you in social situations you probably need serious professional help take it from me these drugs can truly become a problem. Am sure your Dr. could prescribe something different that would be far more effective than any of these. And never never ever drink alcohol while taking meds

I've taken Xanax, Valium, Ativan, and Klonopin for anxious depression, to help me sleep, and to relieve the muscle spasms that I get from an old auto accident injury. I have worked doing psychotherapy with many patients who are taking all of these medications but usually their disorders are much more severe than social anxiety. All of these meds belong to a class of meds called benzodiazepines, and directly affect benzo. synapses in your central nervous system, unlike alcohol. The effects are to make you feel more relaxed. They are addictive medications, and need to be taken exactly as prescribed for the disorder that they were prescribed for. They should NOT be taken in order to get buzzed--they impair your coordination. And if you have a valid reason for taking them, you should only take them for that reason. Usually they are not given for social anxiety d/o unless that disorder is really severe. Cognitive-behavioral or behavioral therapies work well with social anxiety disorder in that you learn new ways to control your feelings by working through your negative thoughts and behaviors. These medications can make you very sleepy (they give them to you to prepare you for the stronger anesthetics that they give for surgery) as well. They do lower inhibitions moderately, but certainly not to the point of inappropriateness that alcohol will when you get really drunk. (Think--dancing on the bar and doing a strip tease--not a pretty picture!)

Also, benzos should NEVER, EVER be taken when you are drinking alcohol. They have potentiating effects on each other, meaning that you get much, much more out of one drink--to the point that you can OD--if you take too much of them together.

I don't drink but have anxiety attacks. The only way I can explain an attack is to compare it to the way you feel when you get pulled over for speeding; but there's no cop and often a car has nothing to do with social anxiety. I was prescribed xanax twice a day. I recently nhad to add vistaril once a day just to talk with people.Read all side effects first: liver, kidney, etc. Good luck.

I don't know anything about Lexomil but the other drugs are for anxiety and will not get you drunk or buzzed like alcohol.

Well perhaps if you take a lot o Valium ot Xanax you'll go into a stopper just like with booze and run the risk of dying. Sound like a lot of fun!

So which one or combination of drugs did you doctor prescribe for you?
