Volvo is Latin for "I roll". The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1911 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products.

Yes, the answers you have received are correct. Volvo in latin means "I Roll", and the Swedes used the "Feminine" sign to show on maps, where the Steel Mills are located. It has nothing to do with the sexes, and the use of that signage has long since been forgotten...
SKF ( Svenska Kulle Fabrekin - Swedish Ballbearing Manufacturer - originally had two engineers who came up with the idea of developing a car company. SKF let the lads go ahead, but gave up on developing a car company, and allowed the use of the word "Volvo".
Since you are researching information, SKF supplied ballbearings to the Nazi's during the day, and also to the Allied forces during the night - that's why they remained Neutral during WW2, and the Fin's are still pissed...
AB Volvo is the 2nd largest truck manufacturer (next to Mercedes), in the world, and is almost the biggest for Heavy Equipment - with the likes of Catterpiller licensed to build Volvo's under their name.
Ford bought only the car division of Volvo for $9 Billion a few years back, and it remains the only profitable part of the company.
Lastly, my Dad agrees, my Volvo S60 has better seats than his S430.
Hope this helps, and it you are researching Volvo, look under AB Volvo, you will get more info. As for the Industrial side, check out Volvo BV, Volvo Penta, and also SAAB, as their aircraft are powered by Volvo engines...
Cheers Henry
