I live in USA, and it is very common for AC plugs to have holes in the prongs. Does anyone know why? Is this common in other countries as well?

Some recepticles have dimples in the metal socket that line up with the holes. It helps hold the plug in place -- a more secure fit.

My mother used to put small locks in the hole to prevent us from watching TV... I don't think that's what they were designed for though.
