Throw a bucket of water over them like Sir Walter Raleigh's servant did

If you're in an area that still permits smoking in restaurants and such, ask to be seated as far away from the smoking area as possible. If your area all ready has a smoking ban, complain to the manager. If that doesn't work, contact the police. Near Pittsburgh recently some bingo hall got slapped with a fine in excess of several thousand dollars for letting the bingo players smoke.

Thankfully I dont have to deal with people smoking in restaurants as the island I live on has banned all smoking in public places, this includes all restaurants, bars, etc.
The only is practically a smoke free place and with 60 thousand people living here that is a good thing.

If they do smoke in restaurants, report it to management and ask to be moved from the table you are at to a place where you wont have your meal ruined by smokers.

I used to be a smoker and now that I am not understand how horrible it is to be eating when someone is smoking nearby.,

I really like the first few steps we have taken here in Norway; It is now illegal to smoke in 'public' buildings, or buildings open to the public. This includes restaurants, cafes, stores, libraries, etc.
You can still smoke outdoors though.

Personally I think you should avoid even that. Ban smoking from everywhere apart from a person's own home. It benefits no-one anyway. And it costs society billions each year.

Well, in most cases there are laws pertaining to this! Think about this though...if we keep giving up rights then how long will it be before you overweight, over eaters are asked to give up a freedom as well? I personally do NOT like for people to smoke when I am eating; however, in public, I put up with a lot of things I would not allow in my home. The more you people gripe, the more freedoms will be taken away until everyone is stripped of something!! So, whatever happened to keeping our noses out of other peoples business? If you think the smoke is bad...quit driving your cars! We will see a lot more good happen if you give up your modes of transportation! But, that will never happen until the government limits your time on the road due to your pollution!! OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!!!!!

Rather than just asking them to put the cigarette out, why not try asking if they'ed mind not smoking as it really makes your eyes hurt. Smokers are the most stubborn bunch and will probably finish their smoke, but it's unlikey they'll light up again.
Using something that they're not expecting like the pain to the eyes means they do not have an immediate answer ready, it's very difficult to say no once someone has explained it causes pain and your not just asking because you don't like it.

Before I even type MY answer I know I'm gonna get thumbs down and you certainly wont pick it as best answer!!!!!!
Although I myself smoke, I'd politely ask them not to and complain to the manager! but it shouldn't happen nowadays! Even without the official ban in the UK it's almost impossible to find a cafe or restaurant where I live that allows smoking!
As for the sealed box > You can put me in one if you like as long as you do the same to all the drunken people out there who make my life hell and seem determined to kill as many other people as possible by driving when they shouldn't (including the morning after) or attacking Police, Ambulance and A&E staff who have to deal with them!

Where I live in Colorado "smoking " has been banned from business's which of course includes restaurants. Eventually that law will also include driving in a car with children present. I think alcohol should be banned as well while they are making new laws. They should also ban red meat . opps sorry I got a litle carried away.

Worry NOT, my friend, - help IS at hand, - because, - in England, - the LAW will deal with anti-social smoking, later this year! I know that I'm gonna be "SLATED", for my opinions, - but, - I'm gonna GIVE 'em, ANYWAY!

So, REALLY, now, the QUESTION should BE one, of what ARE we gonna do, about the Nation's "ANTI-SOCIAL BREATHERS", - those who use FRESH AIR, that they haven't paid TAX on? Like the "£1.50 MILLIONAIRE" group, -TORIES, - and, weak-kneed LIBERALS?

Yes, - OF COURSE I object, to people smoking, whilst I'm eating, - there's NOTHING objectionable about THAT, - IS there? But, the situation, has gone WAY out of control!

The anti-smoking lobby should get BACK IN THEIR BOXES, now, - because the LAW has been CHANGED, to SUIT THEIR "ACCEPTABLE" etiquette/behaviour!

Who will the Government attempt to CRUCIFY next?

Oh please roll on 1st July! Then i will be able to go into a restaurant or a pub or a bar and not come out stinking of smoke. I don't think smokers have really realised yet what 1st July will involve. Restaurants, pubs, bars, workplaces, etc. NO SMOKING. It is a dangerous, expensive and stupid habit (guilty myself years ago). I work in the healthcare industry and so many of my colleagues smoke! They know what it does but they continue. Why??
