Has anyone recently stayed in the Silom area of Bangkok? We are traveling with children which means I will probably need two rooms. I see mixed reviews for the Dusit Thani and for two rooms it could get costly. The Holiday Inn and Tawana are cheaper, but is it a real drop in quality? Any recent experience would be appreciated.

I used to stay at the Holiday Inn frequently, although I haven't been there for a few years now, for the price it was excellent value, good sized rooms and good facilities (used to be a Crown Plaza), definitely a notch above most Holiday Inns. You should also check out the Sofitel Silom, I've heard many good things about them. A friend of mine recently stayed at the Triple Two Silom, I visited him there, beautiful boutique hotel, always rated highly. Here's a good link to hotels in the Silom area: http://www.hoteltravel.com/thailand/bangkok/hotels.htm
The Dusit Thani is probably considered a bit more luxurious than most of the hotels in the area, but is quite expensive, good luck.

I have not stayed in Silom. I avoid the area. If you were considering the Dusit Thani, then you can afford The Centre Pointe Silom. They have 2 br suites for USD 203 per night. These are run like hotels. Except it is more like an apartment.
Centre Point Silom is right next to a Robinsons store, with small food shops the kids will like, pizza, McD's etc.

The rates I got were from www.asiarooms.com

and the Centre Point chain's website is www.centrepoint.com

Good luck.

I have no idea about your budget. In Silom itselfs, if you look for a good location I would recommend Dusit Thani as it's right in front of subway station and walking distance to Sky Train. For a boutique one , would recommend Heritage Baan Silom. For a nice newly built hotel walking distance from silom and right in front of sky train is The Heritage Bangkok. On Sathon is not a bad idea. I like Banyan Tree the most. The tall slim shape building with the highest outdoor restaurant in south east asia. It's nice to have a cocktail and enjoy the night view of Bangkok and feel the breeze.

There's one boutique hotel not far from Silom road - The Siam Heritage. It's on Suriwongse road, next to Silom, not too far from Patpong. The decor is Thai style with a small pub in front.
Or if you're looking for something higher end, try Tripple Two Hotel . Really hip, really cool.

Try Silom Village Inn, it might be a bit noisy but hey... it is Silom Rd. Or try For You Residence accross the street, it's newer, small boutique hotel.
I think Holiday Inn should be nice too.

Have fun!!
=)

if you're looking for value for money, stay in Silom Serene.

there's also this other place called The Rose Hotel - which is a boutique hotel in Surawong Road - which is parallel Silom Road (you can easily walk over to Silom) http://www.r24.org/thailandhotels24.com/bangkok/rosehotel/
if you don't care about price, go for Sofitel Silom.

The Sofitel on Silom is a very classy place. It is convenient yet just out of the way of all the noisy activity.
