Jews also moved to Egypt when Judah was defeated militarily by Babylon, circa 600 BC. There were quite a large number living there during the time of the Ptolemies (descendants of one of Alexander's generals who ruled the country and mixed Greek and Egyptian culture).

I am sorry your memory fails you for the moment.Since for some reason you have decided not to read Genesis again here is your answer: Abraham visited Egypt early in Jewish history However it was Joseph the great grandson of Abraham that was responsible for the children of Jacob to live in Egypt. Through misfortune and betrayal and the blessings of God Joseph became second only to Pharaoh in power in the land of Egypt. This allowed Joseph to bring his Family to Egypt to live in the Land of Goshen. This has been just an abbreviated account of the history, for a complete account please read Genesis again.

No i think it goes like this...

.....Do u know the story of Joseph and his brothers? Well his dad, Abraham i think, was more affectionate towards him than all his brothers and got him this colourful cloak. Joseph also always had these dreams where his brothers bow down to him like he was a king. One day he took some food to his brothers where they looked after their fathers sheep in the fields. They disided to get rid of him cos they were jealous. So they threw him in a pit....but his eldest brother felt bad and convinced the others not to jut let him die, ut to sell him as a slave to passing merchants.

So Joseph was taken to egyp as a slave to the king. While he was there he gained favour in the eyes of the pharo ecasue Joseph was the only person in the whole country that could interperate the pharo's strange dreams (with the help of God, ofcourse). After a long time, Joseph grew up and was almost in charge of all the pharo's affairs.

Meanwile, there was a terrible draught where Josephs brothers and father were (Canan, i think) So Abraham send some of his sons to ask fro some food for his people from the pharo. Since Joseph was in charge of the food stores, they had to speak to him. He recognised them, but they did not regonise him. He kept them prisoner, cos he wanted to see his younges brother and after a while, all of his brothers and father were in egypt with him, not knowing that it was Joseph they were dealing with.

Somehow, Joseph told them who he was and i think they ended up staying in egypt....and i cant remember but maye some other Isrealites also went.

Im not sure if im right, but i think that is a VERY ROUGH description of how the first Isrealites when to Egypt. Find it in the Bible and read the whole thing, its really interesting.

Are you familiar with the story of Joseph? His father favored him above all his other brothers and they eventually sold him into slavery in Egypt. Well, as Joseph had been staying in Egypt for years, there was a famine and his brothers came by to get some food because they'd heard that there was food in Egypt. Well, things happened and Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and he motioned for them to return to Canaan and get his father. The Pharaoh learned of this and was pleased, so therefore Joseph's family was able to move into Egypt and live there until Moses delivered his people from slavery in Egypt.

Joseph (A great-grandchild of abraham) became a ruler in Egypt and had his family moved there since a famine was coming to their land. Their descendants remained for approximately 400 years.

They went there during a famine, because Egypt had food.
